Where is....

...Edinburgh of the South Seas?
Discovered this myself tonight. Before I would not have been able to point to where it is on the globe.

Looks to me very much like Table Mountain, Cape Town... Been up it... One heck of an experience going up to the top in the cable car :)

And amazing when it's cloudy and it's said to have its tablecloth on :)

I had to look it up, but The Edinburgh of the Seven Seas would appear to be on Tristan da Cunha, which has a number of claims to 'fame'

"....is regarded as the most remote permanent settlement on Earth, being 2,173 kilometres (1,350 mi) from the nearest other human settlement, on Saint Helena."
"The settlement was founded on the island of Tristan da Cunha in 1816 by a Sergeant Glass from the Borders of Scotland"
"It was damaged in a volcanic eruption on the island in 1961, which forced the entire population to abandon the settlement and evacuate to Calshot, Hampshire in the UK."
"There is one road, the M1"
"The town is home to the island's emergency services, which comprise one ambulance (a Toyota Hilux operated by Camogli Hospital), one fire engine (a Land Rover Defender with a small ladder) and one police car (Land Rover Series)"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh ... Seven_Seas

I think it's safe to say that life on the island could be described as 'slow' :)

Thanks Bobins, I do enjoy a bit of extra information and random facts. Don't know if you saw the Ruardean Bears diversion in "Remember these?.. all our yesterdays" but that little fact on Calshot just has me thinking "Why Calshot?" just like the aforementioned Bears story...why on earth did four frenchmen with two bears end up in , apologies to Gibbo, an insignificant little village in the Forest of Dean :-D

Probably because of RNAS Calshot - a sodding great flying boat hangar and associated buildings sitting there just looking for a use. It's yards from the sea - so the T da C residents would have been happy with that, it could have taken them all at a moments notice..... and it was probably cheap
As a random aside - many of the T da C residents suffered in the 'flu epidemics when in Calshot as they had no immunity to it*.

* - No immunity to 'flu, not Calshot :-D

Far from being forced to abandon Tristan da Cunha the islanders were forcibly evacuated & were never intended to be allowed to return. It took the survivors many years of campaigning before the Government were forced to repatriate them.

The chaps and chapesses affectionately referred to it as Alpha Foxtrot.

Yes, are there any better ways to waste time than having a cup of tea and watching a rerun of Antiques Roadshow from Aerospace Bristol? When you are a member of this...probably not.

Now the real geeky account charts the history of how it acquired that moniker

Marc

As well as Antiques roadshow I did take an interest in your picture which if I am right also appeasred on our screens this morning. I'll shove my observations in the spoiler without revealing the actual answer if others want to join in.
Spoiler: show
...Led me to wonder whether our French friends would be scouring their contracts wondering if they charge our taxpayer for the eventual costs, or maybe its run like the railways, they are the operators and the profit makers, and the UK Government underwrites the clean up of the infrastructure when it has come to the end of its useful life.
Hope that doesn't give too many clues
