Here's a real life one to try.

Driving towards me down the country lanes on my way home from work was this lovely little runabout.
So what is it, and approximately when was it made ?

NewcastleFalcon wrote: 13 Feb 2019, 19:08 Obscurity may not be the attraction. How about something many people will remember although few people will have seen in the flesh, and even fewer including me realising where the name came from....the curious can look it up on wiki!
The Mini Moke!
No claim there that the Moke was obscure, and "Historics" is the literal name of the Auctioneers!

Image

Enjoyed reading about the moke and giving it its 5 minutes of fame on the FCF. Last one produced in the UK was 1968 according to wiki so very probably slipping into obscurity if not already there!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini_Moke
The first Mokes were only built at BMC's Longbridge, Birmingham plant. 14,518 Mokes were produced in the UK between 1964 and 1968, 26,000 in Australia between 1966 and 1981, and 10,000 in Portugal between 1980 and 1993 when production of the Moke ended

..and a yellow portugese one, just for fun Image

I spotted many of those vehicles driving through a ford on the Flying Scotsman Rally last year organised by the Endurance Rally Association. First guess would be a Bentley, or maybe if you are following a train of thought...a Lagonda. Will refine it later if necessary. This photo if the number links up and its the right year is a 1936 Talbot 105 Alpine.

Not giving much away there....can I assume its in the red/maroon colour spectrum? Photo is a bit blurry. My thinking is that if you actually own one of those things it would be vitrually compulsory to actually make use of it and go on the Flying Scotsman Rally. Could narrow it down a bit!

Red and black. It was for sale at auction almost exactly 2 years ago with an estimate of £160,000 - £220,000.
A few more details - the first recorded owner was a 'B. McK Wraith McGowan Esq of London W8',
"The model was only in production for a relatively short time and numbers were limited and constructed in batches amounting to some 160 or so in total of which the bulk were saloons (118) and drop-head coupes (21) and only 17 Tourers. Only 24 examples of the short 10' 4" chassis cars were built and of these only 13 were constructed as tourers, of which 12 were bodied by Vanden Plas. Therefore, although other subsequent replicas have been more recently effected, the open sports tourer is a rare machine now, with some of the originals not having survived - a car easily capable of attaining 100mph in comfort and style, with its robust transmission, all-synchro gearbox and excellent brakes to match its performance.
6-cylinders in-line overhead-valve pushrod motor with triple SU Carburettors giving a reputed 140bhp; 4-speed all-synchromesh gearbox with live rear-axle transmission, independent front suspension with leaf-springs to rear; four-wheel mechanical brakes.
The Factory record sheet from xxxxx xxx shows that this car started life originally as a late-series production saloon model S.B. 31/48, 10' 7" wheelbase fitted with coachwork by Charlesworth, supplied to Brooklands Motor Co, of Bond St. London in February......"

Edit : I can find no reference to it ever being in the Flying Scotsman Rally !

Excellent sleuthing again, Neil :) Although I doubt Google would have struggled too much if you put some of those keywords into it
I had to use its reg number (FLO987) to find out more details, and the auction catalogue listing from 2 years ago provided a nice bit of info :
1939 ALVIS 4.3-LITRE SPORTS TOURER WITH REPLICA VANDEN PLAS COACHWORK.
Chassis No: 14847
Engine No: 15332
Registration No: FLO 987
Date of first registration: 21st February 1939

Here's a nice photo of it from a rather extensive gallery of classic car manufacturers and models @ https://truck-uk.smugmug.com/BRITISHCLASSICCARS

...and here is Charles Swain the car's former custodian driving it

Show organiser Malcolm Fearn with Charles Swain, left, in his 1939 Alvis

"Among those exhibiting their cars will be motor enthusiast Charles Swain, who lives in North Oxfordshire. He will be showing four of his vehicles – including a Rolls Royce, a rare 1907 Baby Friswell and a 1939 Alvis 4.3 Van Den Plas Tourer, the first standard production car to have a top speed of more than 100 mph.

Too late to the game again :( I recognised that immediately as an Alvis.

One of my local trade acquaintances had a Grey Lady in his collection...………….now I wonder what happened to that when he died.

Something tantalisingly familiar about the rear lights.
