Please do feel free to point out some of these rules and red tape...?
Where do I start ?
The main reason (taken from the Wired artice) would appear to be financial incentives.
This would bring us to State Aid:
"In principle, state aid is not allowed in the EU. However, some state aid is beneficial to the economy and supports growth and other policy objectives. State aid can be given to support a wide variety of activities including research and development, environmental protection and aid for small to medium-sized businesses. The state aid rules allow for good aid, which is necessary to deliver growth and other important objectives."
Taken from: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/state-aid

They don't seem to have done Germany much harm - you know, that country "we" reduced to rubble 75 years ago... not done bad for themselves with all those rules, restrictions and red tape have they?

Be careful of using Germany as a role model - they only just, by a gnats crotchet - avoided a recession in the last quarter.

I think people would pay a bit more for good quality clothes. Personally, I always find clothing without any polyester of other derivatives like that in - and get a high cotton / wool content wherever I can - mainly because I don't want to be giving off electric shocks to everyone around me.

In contrast to my last post, this is meant as - only very mildly - bait and inflammatory :rofl2: <So please don't take it seriously>

Woolen clothing isn't as good as it use to be as the EU banned Napthalene - the main active constituent in mothballs - back in 2008

That will be "state aid" I presume.

Is this a reasonable definition?
Category 1 "Play by the rules States" who habitually find ways of getting round those rules.
Category 2 "States" who don't do business by those rules in any case.
Category 3 "States" that worry that they just might break the rules so decide not do anything just in case.
Quiz of the day

Can you put China, France, and the UK into the appropriate category?

It doesn't matter where they are from if they are leaving, it's still mainly UK jobs that are going.

Flybmi laid the blame at their issues solely on Brexit.

I's sure "state-aid" got a mention a few posts ago. Remembering that the UK is a state which likes to think of itself as a world leader I wonder where our first gigafactory is going to appear making things like batteries for our automotive industry. India are going to beat us to it I fear. Don't think they worry too much about State aid.

India is getting its own giant battery gigafactory for electric vehicles

Talking of state aid, what of the French Government's little "investment" Renault?

Well I had a bit of firsthand experience today of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Of course they are saving millions with their synergies. Yes if you want a pathetically designed rear mounting hanger for the back box of your Clio where do you go to.....Renault main dealers? Think again....Lookers Nissan.

Image

I'll put the "Main dealers" experience into room 101 later. I would put their knowledge of Renault at zero, and didn't have the part I needed.

Anyway back to the showroom........I would say based on take up of showroom space their focus was on selling Qashqai's Juke's and Micra's and even had the temerity to display an X-Trail, oh and there was a single token leaf.

Even Nissan who make the things, dont seem to be having a big push to sell them. The rather chatty (in my opinion) circular rotating message board above the meeting and greeting point was displaying the finance deal on the Qashqai ad nauseum.

Infinity

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Posh Nissans in other words, and who knew, made in Sunderland....

Yet another case of a car maunfacturer backing the wrong horse, and Infinity is being withdrawn from the European market....why? because it didn't sell enough cars.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cdl8n2edem8t/nissan

Not enough announcements from Nissan about what they are going to produce at Sunderland. Lets face it they are the only volume electric car maker/ volume battery manufacturer/assembler in the whole of the United Kingdom.

We are hardly going to be world leaders in such matters, if we cant create a market to sustain one two three four five volume EV manufacturers, let alone see the only one which has so far emerged and thus far survived, join the relocation drain to South East Asia.

My daughter's neighbour has one - a Q70

Imported from Japan. Sunderland (Washington really) only make the cheap ones.

Maybe if Nissan retreats completely to Japan, they could demolish the factory and reinstate Sunderland Airport again Steve..........Where I did my one and only parachute jump in the early 1980's. Bit too near the A19 when you are floating down slowly from 2000 feet.

We lived in Fatfield the (near Heather Mills :) ) and would watch the planes and skydivers from our sitting room window - it was upstairs :)

I was very disappointed when they plonked Nissan over it. Plenty of other sites available.

Meant to say that there are scads of Infinitis around here. I was up at my daughter's doing some odds and sods - she is in Addis Ababa - and parked beside the Q70 but passed loads of the smaller ones, not as common as Jukes and Quashkies but still not a rarity.I thought they were Mazdas at first, the logo is very similar.
