Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Not had any real problems with eBay - but their complaints/returns procedure IS weird/confusing/inconsistant & self-contradictory.
Not a great one for feedback, especially as this is another area where eBay delight in making it all needlessly complicated. Nor do I like the fact that you have to award 1 star - even if you're thinking -3 would be about right! Then there's the totally unacceptable nonsense of protecting certain sellers from even neutral feedback. As for Amazon - only if it was to save my life: never forgiven them for a bad experience when it was an on-line bookshop!

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Hi,
An update, fitted radiator and car running again. However the temp was only getting up 75 on the gauge, so I assumed possible thermostat failure, opening to early. Have replaced with a new one which is 82 degrees but temp still not climbing above 80 Thermostat is defenitly opening as top hose is getting hot, but the temp just not registering at gauge properly. So I've checked to see whether the fans are coming on, but they are not. Could this be the thermostat sensor or something else. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin

Your low Fan speed will only come on at 92 °C and the high fan speed at 97 °C for a Series 1 XUD 1.9 TD
Or at 90 °C and 101 °C respectively if fitted with a Bitron Box with A/C.

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Hi Marc,
Are you saying not to worry, I know before the fans were cutting in around 85 mark, obviously with a radiator leak. But I still expect the engine to reach normal temp, I was in some heavy traffic today but the temp still didn't go any futher than 80 i know the weather is colder at present but it should not effect engine temp that much. My car does have AC, what is the briton box it's obviously on the car somewhere.. I did bleed the system off through the bleed screws, could it be an air lock. It used to go just above 85 all the time and fans would cut in. The other thing is what is the right thermostat for this model, seems everywhere I've checked is from 80 to 82 83 and 85
on every car part site including Mister auto.
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
There are multiple temp sensors/senders on the engine, all on the water outlet/thermostat housing:
These control separate functions, eg:
- injection ECU control
- water temp control unit (Bitron), for fan operation
- temp gauge ('dial')
So it is possible for the gauge to mis-read, even though everything else is ok.
Thermostat is listed as 83°C.

There are various setups on the 1.9D XUD - depending on the variant of the engine and with / without A/C, but the thermostatic regulator on all these opens at 83 °C as Chris notes.

Kevin posted his VIN earlier, Marc: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].
That cooling parts diag is for it.

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Hi thanks everybody for your help,
Good pictures Chris thanks, I will check tomorrow, see how many sensors it has. And probably should check fuses also as needed to remove plug from A/C. The car has never ever been upto 90 degrees, not in the three years
I have owned it, not even in the summer. Fans always cut in about 85.
Thanks
Kevin

Thanks Chris.
Thought I'd put this up for good measure - the cooling circuit For Kenny's Xantia - there are 6 of these circuits, but this one should be correct from the RPO and VIN:

Here is the data for your vehicle with A/C and the BITRON unit for info:

I'd not trust the accuracy of the gauges that much. I've had 9 TDs and they all read slightly differently.

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Thanks Marc,
Will go through everything tomorrow, thats a good picture too and if I'm not mistaken there it shows the thermostat the other way around. Yet when I look on diagrams and been taught spring side always goes to the engine side and top triangle facing radiator. I can't see it going in any other way, but this diagram shows otherwise. This can't be right surely.
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
Like I said Kevin, there are 6 circuits and these changed based on build number:
Key to the Diagrams:
Your build number is 07158 from your VIN, so would be number 6, which is the one I posted before, so this might clear up the confusion and another reason why VIN is key as there were so many mods and changes on these throughout production.
Circuit No. | Vehicle type | gearbox | air conditioning | Validity |

2 | atmospheric diesel | Mechanical | With | Up to number OPR 6355 |
3 | atmospheric diesel | Mechanical | With or without | From OPR 6356 number |
4 | atmospheric diesel | automatic | With or without | - |

Re: Citroen Xantia 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1996
The temp sensor connectors have been known to be colour-coded thus:
Injection (engine ECU) - Green
Water temp control unit (Bitron) - Brown
Gauge - Blue
Might help differentiate.
Pull the Blue one, and see whether it affects the gauge.
With engine running, pulling the Brown one usually puts fans on to full speed. (You might have to turn IGN off and then on again to return to normal.)

The Bitron Box Temp Sensor should be a 2-way Brown and the Gauge Temperature Sensor is a 2-way Blue connection (for this specific vehicle).
