French cars are a mystery to me

I had a low oil warning after I serviced my 207. I was puzzled as to why as the sensor was working when I warmed up the car. I spent an hour looking for the sensor before I gave up and looked on service box it's not easily accessible. Anyhoo I started the car 2 hours later got "oil ok" on the screen, very puzzling to me.
Some of you might remember I couldn't get the front fogs to work on the 307 I had. I got new bulbs in Halfords and thought I'd be good to go but nothing. There was power going to the bulbs and the bulbs would light connected to the battery. I was pulling my remaining hair out for a while then I put new Ring bulbs in and the fogs worked. Very female, but like my missus saying "if you dont know what the matter is there's no point in me telling you" Grrr

Don't rely on an electronic oil sensor; check the dipstick.

I always dip my car weekly mate old school do all the weekly checks. It was beeping and flashing a little triangle and the beeping is very irritating! Would that be a test failure if it stayed on?

Yes. Can’t be any warning lights on. Which exact lamp is on?, a photo might help

It was a little triangle below the oil warning, there was also check oil level flashing on the middle display but it's gone now

My 207 1.4 16v used to say "oil ok".

It wasn't OK. These sensors are not reliable in the slightest. Dipstick was dry.

You need to top up oil into in order the sensor to report the correct value to the ENGINE ECU. In that case the some amount of oil in the engine maybe mix in the fuel or maybe there was a leaking. Please consult a technician to solve the issue.

IIRC, owners' handbooks used to say that the oil level sensor (some actually displayed the level on a dash gauge) was to be used as a guide only, and dipstick should be used to accurately check.

As a warning light is a test failure is there a way to bypass the sensor if needed?

Funny that I read about the low oil warning light this morning because only yesterday afternoon I had it on my C5-X7. I'd been parked
for half an hour on a cliff road with the car tipped backwards and also towards the driver's side. When I returned and started the engine I got the gong-sound and a low oil warning notice. It didn't go off even after it got on level road so I stopped and switched off. To my surprise, it was still on when I restarted. I checked the dipstick and drove back to base with the service light on. After standing for 10mins I switched on again. "Oil level correct" Presumably, it needed the BSI to sleep it off??

I wonder if that's what happened to mine, It was left sitting for a while and even though I knew there was the right amount of oil in it the warning and beeping were very irritating. It seems fine now

JohnD probably has the answer, you won't get an accurate reading if the car is parked on a slope, forwards, backwards or sideways.

They're also crap warning systems Peter. My 307 presently tells me "oil ok". There's more of it down the side of the engine than in the sump....

With the sump off the oil sensor from inside looks like a second dipstick, on my previous C5 it gave dodgy readings and I was going to replace it but while the sump was off I cleaned it of the old black oil around it and when the engine was fixed it worked ok, so maybe a flush would sort one that's not doing its job.

This just goes to show what a nonsense the MoT has become: low oil is hardly a safety issue nor, for that matter, is a CEL (which, in my experience) means absolutely nothing. 9 times out of 10, any of these lights coming on means the sensor's failed NOT the system it's monitoring!
