Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
You would normally expect the white background with a black diagonal slash indicating the national speed limit for that type of carriageway.
I don't think I have ever seen one like the above.

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
I had to look it up, and the answer is rather interesting. It appears to be neither fish nor fowl. It's not classed as a motorway - but has motorway type restrictions on it, nor is it an all purpose road (i.e. what everything else that isn't a motorway is classed as) and therefore the National Speed Limit does not apply - hence the need to display what the speed limit is. It might best be described as a non-motorway motorway.

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
So it isn't a motorway, nor a road that isn't a motorway!?
Whatever, it IS a dual carriageway &, therefore, the speed limit is 70 - unless a lower speed is indicated. What's Welsh for otiose?

Possibly not in the eyes of the law / Dept. of Transport
I'll post what wikipedia says on it as that simplifies it sooo much
"Two sections between Llanddulas (Junction 23) to Conwy (Junction 17) are signed as a 70 mph (110 km/h) speed limit because they are classed as non-motorway special roads. Unlike other sections of the A55 that have National Speed Limit (NSL) signage and are accessible to all motor vehicles, motorway-style restrictions (although the A55 is not a motorway) apply on these stretches of road (e.g. no pedestrians, learner drivers, farm vehicles etc). As the section is not part of the UK motorway network, or classed as an all-purpose road (public right of way), the National Speed Limit does not apply so 70 mph (110 km/h) signs (the maximum speed permitted on UK roads) are used instead."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A55_road
So that clears it up then

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
The thread is entitled the Pickled Egg Trivia Quiz, Van......you have to expect trivia and as far as trivia goes those stretches of the A55 and their signs are 100% on topic!
On those stretches with the 70 signs you can quite happily put your foot down in a Ford Transit take it past the NSL of 60 on dual carriageways, hit 70mph and be completely within the law!

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
Sorry if I appeared to be taking it too seriously &, I suppose, trivia does equate to nonsense, so as fascinating as it may be, I'll say no more.
Must admit though, I've never even noticed those signs - but then they'd just be a blur in the dark!
On reflection, I think a stretch of the Torbay ringroad has "70" signs, possibly only in one direction. I'll try to remember to pay more attention next time.

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
Sorting out some bike bits, I found this socket, which my Dad has passed on. It was bought for a specific Citroen job, never used again. I've also realised it is 3/4" drive, so not much use, as I don't have an adapter! Can anyone guess / work out / know what it was for?

Re: The Pickled Egg trivia quiz
I forget the size now but I had to buy a box spanner like a drainpipe for the GS rear hub* nuts but that looks like a contender.
*didn't need it to get them off, the method was to smash them off with a cold chisel and fit new ones.
