Which alternator for 03 C5?

It looks like the alternator has given up on our C5. 2.0 Hdi, hatch, 53 plate. The car is currently in a lay by waiting for a charged battery to make it the remainder of the distance home

I can see there's a 90 amp and a 150 amp one available, the 150 amp one being rather more money. Does anybody know which one the car came with/recommendations on which to get? The car doesn't tow.

Any gotchas for alternator swapping?

Post up the VIN (it will hide itself) and we can have a look - usually 150A if AC is fitted. It's a bit of awkward on Xantia HDI, but I suspect C5 is98765 bit easier as the engine bay is bigger. Don't buy an RTX from EuroCarParts - they are terrible.

They will be 120 or 150s for a 110 Diesel, but we will need the VIN. As there are a large number that were fitted, it's best to identify the existing one you have - there should be a plate with the identification on and this will ensure you have the right replacement.

Right, car retrieved, alternator removed. Things to remember : having a bigger spanner for the tensioning pulley helps a lot, and do the bolt behind it first, not last. (I carelessly did them in order of easiness to start with. Better to do the most dificult first.)

It's a Bosch 150 amp one.

Now, how likely is it that it's the regulator which is knackered rather than the alternator, and should I have a go at replacing that first? It seems quite easy to get hold of replacements which claim to be compatible.

Use that number beginning 9646321880 for a replacement if you want like for like.

New regulator obtained (25 quid), fitted, and all back in the car. Looks to be working - for the first time I've thought the battery gauge was useful!

I do wonder if it would have been possible to change the regulator without removing the alternator. The oil filter would have had to come off, but the rest looks like it might be possible. That would save a whole lot of messing about with inner wing covers and drive belts...
