Citroen C2 locking issue

Post by tomjyoutwit »

Good Afternoon,

I opened up my drivers side door today to try and diagnose a rattle, once I removed the door card the source of the rattle was a cable that was not connected to anything.

I have reconnected this cable and now there is a beep when the door is open, the car has never beeped when the lights are on and the door is open so I don't know what it is trying to tell me.

The major issue is I cannot lock the car. I bought it with just a key, no remote central locking or buttons on the fob. Before reconnecting this cable I had to press the locking button on the centre console and then lock the drivers door manually. Now it won't lock as the drivers door keeps the process from locking!

Is there any way around this without removing the door card again?

Thanks in advance!

You can order a new fob from the dealer if you want your central locking working again. They will have to pair it to the car , which they can do when it arrives. Although there are aftermarket ones, but you must have the correct electronics inside to work with your car, and the correct frequency for it to work. As there are generally many issues with the e bay bought ones from China, I'll only recommend a dealer one as it is guaranteed to work.

So I've had the steering shroud off and the chip is taped around the receiver that is usually around the steering ignition barrel. There is only the green chip here and more tape around the ignition which I suspect has the little black (transponder?).

If I put my empty key back together would this give me at least central locking? I understand this would kill my two other keys, but with that cable in the door reconnected the car now thinks the key is in it which is causing that beep and i've had to park it in a friends garage tonight!

Also this makes sense as to why the car has never pinged when I leave the lights on- it thinks the key is still in!

For the central locking to work the fob must have the transponder chip in the fob. That has to handshake with the immobiliser system in the car for it to unlock the car, and assuming the remote fob circuitry is working.

I don't understand why you think the other 2 keys would not work?. The only time a key or keys are locked out is if they were not included in the key programming session that your current keys were coded in.

In either case, it's not good to have the transponder chip left next to the transponder coil as it will mean the car can be started by anyone.

It's obvious that someone has butchered things about a bit - and yes, you are correct about the ping - that's usually the keys in ignition warning, which would make sense if somebody disconnected the central locking wiring in the door.

The other two keys have no chips in them. Just the blades cut and work off of the Jerry rigged immobiliser.

Right, I understand you now. So yes, once you remove the key transponder chip from the transponder coil, of course they won’t work. But the non fob keys should also have transponder chips embedded in the plastic moulding that holds the key blade in. They get programmed to the car too, unless these are just key blades alone.

Happy New Year Marc!

I've had some free time this morning and I am not needing the car so I've stripped all the dodgy electrical tape off- I've put the chip back in one of the keys and I have remote central locking back!

Unfortunately the car will not start (my taping job from the other day was not sufficiently tight so it looked like I was hot wring my own car every time I wanted to start it!) Could this be an issue with how the black box around the ignition is seated?

Hi, Happy New Year too.

Glad that has partially resolved the issue.

Is it possible that your transponder aerial is knackered? Item 1 in the diagram - it fits over the ignition barrel.

This is the part 6160C0 (the 0s are digits not letters).

There's one here on the bay for £12.99 plus postage

Thanks Marc,

The green chip was taped to part one, inside where the cable goes into.

I have anti-theft error message, followed by PLIP battery low, I have replaced the battery just to check and I still can't turn over the car.

That's the green chip that was underneath the steering wheel placed into a blade I had cut previously.

Have you tried re-synchronising the key? You need to do this if replacing the battery.

First, if you have tried continuous attempts to start the car, leave it for 5 minutes as it will go into a protected mode.
  • Place the key of the high frequency remote control to be synchronised in position "ignition+"
  • Press, for 10 seconds, on the locking button of the high frequency remote control
  • Release the locking button of the high frequency remote control
  • Wait one minute
Then try to start it.

Will try that in 5 thanks Marc, I took it upto a locksmith who said the transponder doesn't appear to be coded- I think i'm screwed to be honest :(

Since the locksmith had the key open the central locking no longer works either!

I'm going to clean the PCB as it has some tape residue on it, if that doesn't yield results it's game over I think.

Don't think I can do the key pairing Marc, the vehicle is in economy mode.

The locksmith is incorrect, because if the transponder wasn't coded, it would not allow unlocking and locking of the doors, which you already mentioned in your last post that it worked when your located the transponder back to the key fob. It cannot 'lose' its programming, but the resynchronisation is needed once the battery is replaced.

I would certainly examine the contacts in the fob, as the micro switches can become loose, unsoldered or completely fall away. However, if you have a weak or discharged battery, I would get that trickle charged overnight, as a poor battery will play havoc.

Economy mode will not affect the transponder hand shaking, unless the car battery is totally flat - Economy mode may be shown, but that just stops any accessories from being used until the car has been run for a long enough period to reset to the 30 mins max allowed. So to get your 30 mins back you would need to drive for an hour, or 30 mins to get 15 mins of accessory use etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the battery was causing issues, I have one of the units where I can plug the car directly into the house- would that help?

I have contacted some local people with Lexia- if I have any issues I should be able to reprogram my current key as a stop gap? I have the two codes from Citroen in my paperwork draw.

Would you be able to advise what MHZ fob I need as a replacement (i'm assuming FSK?) and would I be able to buy a more durable key? The two button PSA one I have seem lacking on the quality front!

A genuine fob with they key cut specified on order is £158.92 inclusive at the dealer.

Part number: 649086 (Uncut)
Part number: 6554NR (Cut and ordered via Dealer)

There is one here on the bay £59.95.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Citr ... 1830178948

But I would be a bit wary of getting really cheap ones as there have been countless issues of these not working properly.

I believe these use the 433 MHz frequency, but I don't have the transmission protocol for this particular fob.

So if I purchase the eBay one, it will be ready to rock and roll I just need to tell the car to accept it using Lexia?

Locksmith said he can give me a DS3 key if I wanted- would you know anything about that Marc?

Whilst i'm picking your brain, if I can get a functioning Lexia, is that all the equipment I need?
