C5 X7 AC Compressor pulley

Post by osx »

Can i get this separately or do i need to get the whole compressor? Had cam belt replaced today (good timing as it had a few cracks) and was told that the compressor pulley was rusty and noisy.

To my knowledge the whole thing from Citroen at least - but they do make pulley's available. Your original was part 6453XE and is a Sanden SD7C16 1333, but was replaced with part 9800840380, so if you have a Google for either of those, depending on which it is you have fitted, you may be able to source a pulley. Some of these range up to the £60 mark and beyond though.

Additionally, your car may of been fitted with part 648705 (Sanden SD7C161346) or part 6453 XF (also a Sanden SD7C16 1333), so I suggest you have a look at the original part to correctly identify it as there were obviously several compressors they fitted. This info is based on your car VIN ending 450.

Did you have the tensioner pulleys done when the timing belt was done? Mine was noisy until I had the pulleys, water pump and belt done as part of the whole kit and now it's silent.

Will need to check - would have thought that with changing pump and cam belt the tensioners would be included.

As for the compressor i was looking at part 9660555380 which i assume was the original before it was replaced with 9800840380?

You might want to get a second opinion on the compressor pulley. It's normal for there to be slight signs of rust coming from them, and signs of rust/dust wouldn't automatically mean it needs replacing. If it is noticeably noisy, however, then it may well be on its way out.

It is noisy. Does it mean that the compressor is on its way out of the pulley?

As far as the cam belt goes, Citroen do 3 options - the belt, the belt and pulleys and then finally all the previous plus water pump.

The complete timing kit for my X7 was £158 ish from Citroen. I would not assume anything, as they will only do what you tell them.

As for that A/C part 9660555380, I cannot see any reference to it in any of the X7 models.

Difficult to say from this distance, I'm afraid. I'd be cautious of going for an immediate replacement of the compressor purely because it's not a common failure point on these cars - hence recommending a second opinion. It's not quite a straightforward replacement either - the aircon system would need to be evacuated first, then the compressor replaced along with new seals for the pipe connections, then the system vac'd out and tested, then refilled with gas. £100 plus parts ??? I'm not saying your compressor and/or pulley doesn't need replacing.... just that it might be worth getting someone else to look at it. :)

I can confirm I've already had my compressor go on the X7 Robin - had a new one under warranty.

One of the aircon pipes in the engine bay were a known early failure point - replaced with a modified part, and many condensors failed due to holing, and any aircon compressor can fail due to shaft seals failing due to lack of use of the aircon, but I was not aware of these (X7) compressors failing due to 'excessive noise' - which I'd normally associate with bearing failure or excessive wear on the compressor clutch.

I had a new condenser fitted as they could not determine the cause of the leak after 3-4 visits back to the dealer - until they finally found a small nick at the top. So after finally getting that all done, went on a long trip to Yorkshire to pick up a Picasso for a relative and it was a steaming hot day - the A/C compressor failed on the return journey - just stopped turning - and as you know they won't investigate - it's a simple new replacement which I had done - so unfortunately I don't know what went wrong with it.

An interesting fault...... ! One of the reasons a compressor won't turn is because it won't engage due to a no / low gas warning. If it was a simple case of the compressor not turning then it might have been just due to low gas pressure. If it was seized then that's a different matter. Not that it matters to you, Marc, as it was all under warranty :-D I think the warranty you had on your car was a wise investment

Not the gas Robin as the circuit was still full and had been extensively checked for leaks prior to and over the last 2 months before it went, with recharging and then empty after a day - this went on 4 times plus - dye tests were done - until finally they found a knick in the condenser - so easy enough - all topped up again and fine for a month or so until the compressor finally went.

As it's a Citroen warranty thing they have to have it confirmed and tested, which is was found to be faulty - but I never got to know what the issue was - I assume they just tested the circuit again and did a diagnostic on the ECU which probably confirmed it - but I was pretty pi**ed off at this point in summer without A/C for the best part of 3 months on and off. So I just had a courtesy car and left it with them to deal with.

That Citroen extended warranty was indeed a wise investment - about £250 ish a year and I only cancelled it last year as I thought I must be near the max. payout value considering all the other stuff I had done on it (New Rack, Crankshaft Oil Seal, rear suspension pipe, driver side complete new window motor and regulator, A/C compressor, condenser, front and rear height correctors, new windscreen wiper motor / ECU) and prbably a few other bits I can't remember!
