Xantia 2.0 HDI late model with AC - radiator fans

Thanks Colin, I had one too, but I’ve just been little tied up doing 🍽, I’ll see if I have the diagram in a tick as I have to use th other system for that.

Well defeat! I've looked at both the engine cooling and A/C diagrams and there is B all there for the fans! I do know that a lot of stuff is missing from Xantia Diagrams - being a little on the earlier side before they started collating it all going forward. Sorry about that.

Right. Check it just now and looks like all fuses are alright. I've checked three relays (located between fans) in black plastic box and there is no issue with them at all - no burns or melts on sockets and relays's pins are clean and not damaged. As I've check them I found loose piece of plastic located behind fans and radiator and some damages to frame itself.

Any suggestion what else I can do ? As mentioned before I got donor car from 1999, but trying to start with small bits before thinking about replacing of whole thing.

I have no idea if you can decipher the electrical diagrams but i know i cobbled everything into one post, diagrams are from the wonderful Clogzz

@Pshemsky that bit of plastic looks like a piece of fan blade to me.

The damage is on the housing unit and they do spin at a fair old whack so assuming you have a complete assembly i would suggest replacing the whole thing.
Yet to do it on a MK2 but i did do it on the MK1 and from memory one of the aircon pipes drivers side is a right pain and needed to be moved and i have a horrible feeling that both aircon and cooling rads need to be moved as i think they sit in the fan assembly
And yes the bumper needs to be removed

Also had time to think about the air dryer switch and i think that the wires are next to each other that need to be bridged to set fans to high or activate the air con clutch, which 2 do what i cannot remember but 2 on the left get bridged and 2 on the right get bridged

Excellent Colin - thanks for searching that out and putting it together - nothing much for me to do as you have pulled it all together - I think the circuit diagrams have been annotated to show the relevant wiring, so hopefully that will assist.

That broken part looks like a fan motor support strut, rather than a fanblade itself.
Might be repairable with Araldite and a bit of screwed-in support.

Wiring diagram above looks about the right sort of thing.
Five fuses to check:
- F7, F2, F3 - for the relay coils
- F33, F34 - for the main motors

The fan control unit shows its connections:
- Gnd
- 2 leads in from the coolant temp sensor
- 3 leads out: one switches the Low speed relay coil on, the other two switch on the Fast and Changeover relays simultaneously.

You can test the action of those last ones by disconnecting the 3 leads from the control unit, and manually grounding the leads that lead to the relays - one lead for slow speed, the other two leads together for fast. (The other ends of the relay coils are connected to +12 IGN via the fuses F7, F2, F3.)

I agree the broken part in the last pic is the support strut, in the first pic the part on the slam panel looks like part of a fan blade, should have explained a bit more in previous post

if you have the complete radiator and fans just replace the complete unit as it will be easier in the long term. trying to remove the fans on Mk 2 is a real pain.

At the time I had my problem somebody on the forum had an issue with a seized fan motor unfortunately I can't remember who.

If Cloggs comes on he is the man with the knowledge re the a/c system and the radiator fans, if you wade through my thread above you will find some links from Cloggs. re wiring diagrams

Just a quick update, have yet to trawl back through posts to see if this is how it should be but...........
This is based on a RHD so offside fan is drivers side when looking from front of car at the fans, near side is passenger side.
On the air dryer plug i have the following colour wires and i will list them from slam panel to windscreen as you look at the plug.
1.Green
2.White
3.Green
4.Green
Engine is running.
When i bridge 1+2 the offside fan spins at full speed, the nearside does not spin at all.

When i bridge 3+4 the air con compressor kicks in if i have the internal blower on, does not appear to kick in with blower off.

Have yet to remove the thermostat housing plug will try that this weekend.

Finally weather allows to get outside and check few things. So after checking all fuses mentioned by Chris and all relays I can say that there's no sign of blown fuses or melted relays. I check A/C compressor too and it works as it should (air flow on and set on demist/ AC button on/ air dryer plug 3+4 connected). So think that next step will be faulty nearside fan motor itself. I'm not electrician and just asking about best way to check it before I remove it and connect directly to 12V

Easiest just to connect directly to 12v (via a 30A fuse, for safety).
