Here you go:

C4 2.0 16V 180 Timing Belt Replacement

Recommended Tools:
C4 Timing A.PNG
C4 Timing B.PNG
[1] camshaft setting rod (-).0194.A.[2] crankshaft setting rod (-).0189.R.
C4 Timing C.PNG
C4 Timing D.PNG
[3] Pin for retaining the timing belt (-).0189.K.[4] adaptor for angular tightening 4069-T.
C4 Timing E.PNG
Intentionally Blank
[5] hub immobilising tool (-).0189.S.
[ 5a] (-).0189.S1.
[ 5b] (-).0189.S2.
Additional tools: Pliers for removing plastic pegs
Intentionally Blank

Removing:
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal (see the relevant operation).
  • Lift and support the vehicle with front wheels suspended.
  • Remove the accessories drive belt (see the relevant operation).
  • Unclip and release the fuel inlet hose from the timing housing.
C4 Timing F.PNG
C4 Timing G.PNG
Remove bolts (1).
Move aside the power steering pipes.
Rotate the engine using the bolt ( 4) of the crankshaft pulley (3) so as to bring it to the pegging position.
C4 Timing H.PNG
C4 Timing I.PNG
Fit the crankshaft setting rod Using tool [2].
Place the engine in a sling Using a workshop crane.
Remove:
  • Upper right-hand engine support
  • The top timing cover (2)
Peg the camshaft pulleys ( 6) and (7) using the tool [1].
Remove:
  • The (4) bolt
  • The crankshaft pulley (3)
  • The lower timing cover (5)
ESSENTIAL: Never remove the crankshaft pulley ( 3) without pegging the crankshaft and the camshafts.
  • Slacken the roller tensioner (10) bolt (9).
  • Turn the roller tensioner (9) clockwise.
  • Remove the timing belt (8).
Refitting:
C4 Timing J.PNG
C4 Timing K.PNG
Turn the roller tensioner (9); using tool [5a] to pass notch "b".
Position tool [ 5b] to lock the index "a" and take away tool [5a].
Reposition the timing belt ( 8) on the crankshaft pulley (3).
Hold the timing belt ( 8) using the tool [3].
Fit the timing belt (8), strictly in the following order:
  • The tensioning roller (12)
  • The intake camshaft pulley (7)
  • The exhaust camshaft pulley (6)
  • The coolant pump (11)
  • The roller tensioner (9)
N.B.: Fit the belt ( 8) so that it is as flush as possible with the outer faces of the various pinions and rollers.
Remove:
  • The tool [3]
  • The tool [1] from the exhaust camshaft pulley
  • Tool [5b] from the tensioning roller (9)
Refit:
  • The lower timing cover (5)
  • The crankshaft pulley (3)
  • The crankshaft pulley bolt (4)
Tighten the bolt (4) to 4 ± 0,4 daN.m.
Angular tightening 80 ± 5° Using tool [4].
Tensioning the Timing Belt:
C4 Timing L.PNG
C4 Timing M.PNG
Turn the roller tensioner ( 9) anti-clockwise Using an Allen key at "c".Position the index " a" in position "e".
ESSENTIAL: The index " a" should pass the notch "f" by an angular value of at least 10°. If not, replace the tensioning roller or both timing belt and tensioning roller.
Then bring the index " a" to its setting position "f", by rotating the tensioning roller in the direction of the arrow "d".
CAUTION: The index " a" must not go past the slot "f". If it does, repeat the timing belt tensioning operation.
ESSENTIAL: The tensioning roller must not turn while its mounting is tightened . If it does, repeat the timing belt tensioning operation.
Tighten the roller tensioner (9) bolt (10) to 2,1 ± 0,2 daN.m.
ESSENTIAL: The hexagonal drive of the tensioning roller must be at approximately 15° below the cylinder head gasket level "g". If not, replace the tensioning roller or both timing belt and tensioning roller.
Remove tools [ 1] and [2].
  • Fit the upper right side engine mounting.
  • Withdraw the workshop lift.
  • Turn the crankshaft 10 turns in the normal direction of rotation.
ESSENTIAL: No pressure or external force should be applied to the timing belt.
Place the engine in a sling Using a workshop crane.
Remove the upper RH engine support.
Peg the input camshaft pulley using the tool [ 1].

Check
Tensioning the timing belt.
ESSENTIAL: Check the position of the index " a", it should be opposite the slot "f". If the position of the index "a" is not correct, repeat the timing belt tensioning operations.

Refitting Continued:
  • Refit the upper timing cover ( 2).
  • Fit the upper right side engine mounting.
  • Withdraw the workshop lift.
  • Position the power steering pipes.
  • Refit bolt (1).
  • Clip the fuel inlet hose onto the timing housing.
  • Refit the ancillary belt (see the relevant operation).
  • Return the vehicle to its wheels.
  • Reconnect the battery (see the relevant operation).
