xantia rear suspension acting bizzare

Post by chinkostu »

Long time no speak guys!

My Xantias been acting a bit odd the last few weeks. It corrects perfectly fine front and rear when weight is added, if you put it on high it will raise front and back but from any height the rear won't lower using the manual control. Theres plenty of movement in the arms and spheres feel good, but it will happily sit at full height on the rear if the fronts on the deck!

I've given the corrector a good going over but given it corrects perfectly in normal operation i'm sceptical it's the issue.

Should be added if you leave it long enough the rear end will eventually go down (IE overnight) but not all the way, you can give it a quick shove and it then goes down the rest of the way.

Any idea on where to look first? All corner Spheres were changed back in 2016, antisink in 2016 and acc in 2014

Rear height corrector mechanical linkage is seized up. There is a spring between the manual lever and the mechanism, and this just extends if there is too much stiction in the mech. You can, I think, remove the mech without removing the pipes, and get it freed off.

Common for rear height corrector bracket to seize. Have taken them off and after plenty off wd40 and time managed to free them up. If unsuccessful Pleiades keep them. Will need to reset the height once done though. Need a lift though don’t try without .

CitroJim (a long standing member of this Forum) has written up a very detailed guide on how to strip down and clean height correctors;

http://www.eastment.net/hcrefurb/index.htm

Remember, before doing any work on the hydraulics of a Citroen you MUST make sure she is properly supported. Should she unexpectedly drop down with you underneath she WILL kill you!

That guide shows the overhaul of the hydraulic valve, which in this case is probably not the problem. Jim did also describe (probably in his blog) the refurbishment of the carrier mechanism which would be more relevant here.

Oh, and to free up the mechanics external to the height corrector the best things to use are white grease and elbow grease. Work and lube, work and lube (as our friend Citronut used to say).

Ah its the spring I was forgetting about. Obviously the feedback on the control is fine but as you all said it could be stuck and moving the control is just extending the spring!

Looks like i'm getting her up on ramps and giving it a good going over!
