Battery charge or electrical supply faulty

Post by TodiCroitor »

Hi guys,
Last Sunday I've got this error while driving and soon after it was followed by "economy mode" and I couldn't start the engine anymore.
Any idea what is this related to?

Thanks a lot!

Given the miles (kilometres!) the car has covered my first guess would the alternator - specifically the brushes.

If it went when you were actually driving it certainly would indicate that the alternator is not charging and that the battery has been supplying the power to keep everything running - so has run flat. I'd certainly get the battery charged whilst you check the alternator out Dani.

I'd be having a good look in the under bonnet fuse compartment / BSI unit to make sure nothing has started to melt. It's rare that they melt - but they have been known to do that.
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

Kindly check the Power Supply Management Unit commonly known As a BPGA It is attach on the top of the primary battery.

PSA cars don't have that, they have a BCSU (Battery Charge Status Control Unit). Its main function is to calculate the state of charge of the battery and to transmit this information to the built-in systems interface in order to refine the activation of the energy economy mode.

The parameters can be read to determine the accuracy of the BCSU using Diagbox to determine if there is a problem - there is nothing you can physically do to check this. In the event of it failing, the BSI assumes control of energy management regardless and ignores the BCSU values.

A battery discharge is more prevalent in the winter months anyway - with more electrical consumption equipment being used, short journeys, not allowing the battery to get a good charge, more power needed to start the engine, poor earth connections, battery at end of service life (anything over 5 years on an X7), alternator not charging for example.

First thing is to see if the alternator is charging or not and if it is, then suspect the battery or its connections.
