+1 on changing the starter motor.
My 307sw 2.0hdi (Most likely the same engine as your friends) used to suffer from being a pain to start. Some days it would fire straight up, others it would turn over until it drained the battery, even with a jump pack on it!
Did glow plugs, cleaned earths up, glow plug relay, and 2 new batteries in about 6 months. To me it was cranking perfectly, but turned out it was cranking over too slowly. Ended up replacing the factory starter for a higher kw starter, from 90kw to 110kw if I remember to give it more cranking power. 2 years on and it literally fires up as soon as I touch the key, even as I don't use it much anymore now I have the coupe, it can stand for a month and still fire up instantly.
