Ethanol Fuels/winter diesel

Increasing ethanol is gunna be added to petrol.........

Can the forum list the reasonably modern Citroen cars say form 2000 onwards that can use 10% added ethanol without problems, or are all older citroens doomed ?

Also, is winter diesel at the pumps yet ?

E10 fuels are being delayed in the UK as far as I am aware. It would not be practical for us to list what is and isn't compatible, but if the RAC report is anything to go by, then E10 is less efficient therefore requires more of it, so can actually increase fuel consumption costs. Also it has some corrosive properties:

The RAC’s technical director, David Bizley, said possible damage can be “caused by bioethanol's corrosive properties which can lead to damaged seals, plastics and metals.

So although cars after 2011 have to be compliant to run on this stuff, you should check specifically with your own car with the dealer.

I can already see problems with older cars now starting to break down using this stuff

I suspect that the conspiracy theorists amongst us are already suspecting this will be a deliberate attempt by the government to get older cars off the road, through breaking the engines down from the inside out

I don't reckon it will be an issue at all. Much UK petrol already has 5% ethanol. Might notice a bit of a drop in economy, but that's about it. I never had an issue in France using E10 in the Meriva or Grand Picasso, both 10 years old or more. I used it as it was cheaper and to be honest, driving at *ahem* km/h, it makes no difference in mpg..

E10 can be a problem if used in the new(-ish) 1,2 THP (petrol) 110bhp engine. I have a 2016, 12500miles C3 Pic. with this engine and 3 weeks ago I put in E10. Yesterday the car went into limp mode and the upshot from a Citroen dealer was Non..Non..Non...jamais (never).

I've now filled the tank back to full with 98 petrol and hope that the problem will go away.

& I thought the pnly problem was destruction of seals & hoses.

Wonder how Belgian owners of that particular model are managing, as E10 has meen mandatory there for sometime, now?

It is my understanding that is was a European requirement (Directive 2009/30/EC) that E10 (petrol) and B7 (Diesel) had to be available from 1st January 2011 - not compulsory for vehicle use. It won't be any different for Belgium as although countries can make it available earlier, there is no law enforcing it upon vehicle owners for the very reason it can cause problems on some cars.

The European Fuel Quality Directive (1) requires that countries of the European Union that introduce E10 petrol must ensure that sufficient volumes of today’s petrol (sometimes described as E5) are available for vehicles that are not compatible with the use of E10 petrol.

To quote form the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association), they state in their fuel compatibility tables, that PSA group

All Peugeot and Citroën cars with petrol engines are E10 (EN228) compatible since 1st January 2000.

So that would seem to disagree with the C1 issues - and what may not be immediately obvious of course is where a certain range of vehicles are not purely PSA, but co-developed with the likes of Toyota etc. as in the case of the C1... which after all is a Toyota Aygo. So 'pure' PSA vehicles should be fine.
