C5 X7 Front parts

Post by sparksie »

Hi all
I posted about a C5 with no functioning tail lights, before the weekend.
As reported in that thread, the owner had an unfortunate coming together with a very large Massey Ferguson, on her way to see me, so now the tail lights are the least of her worries.
The front bumper is broken in two, the grilles ( I think there are two) are buckled, the o/s headlight is destroyed as is the fog light.
The Wing, though not apparently damaged, has been pushed back by just enough to foul the front edge of the door and prevent it opening without damage. The bonnet has a couple of small bends, at the leading edge, that correspond with the chunky tread on the tractor tyre.
I've had a good poke at it today and all the damage appears to be to plastic and not metal, apart from the cosmetic issues mentioned.
A quick trawl on ebay gave me a fright, with one optimist asking over £700 for a headlight!
Others are asking anything between £120 and £500!
There has to be a better way.
This is a ten year old car and, nice as it is, it has limited value.
A complete scrapper might be of interest.
All the electronics are still functioning correctly at the front, so I won't need to code anything (I think?) as I can transplant the electrickery into the replacements, leaving the car unaware of any change.
Is this reasonable thinking, or am I borderline insane ?
There's no prospect of claiming on insurance, apparently, though I'm not interested in the details.
It seems I may have to repair it, or at least assist in sourcing the parts.
Anybody have any hints, or tips?
Cheers
Sparksie

I got two headlamps (Halogen) from eBay, one was £25 and the other £30.

Also bought a pair of Xenons for £50 :)
Never used :(

Depends on precisely what you need. There are probably 101 parts for the bonnet / bumper alone.

Yes headlights are very expensive on an X7, be thankful it doesn’t have xenons as they are £1200 each to buy new.

Hi Marc
If it had, then realistically speaking, one headlight would write the car off!
Steve, those were the sort of prices I was expecting when I was making sympathetic noises and letting her park it here, pending a decision on how to proceed.
I've done a trawl of local media and sent her links to people with cars for breaking.
In the morning I'll make some phone calls and hopefully make the decision easier for her.
It appears the tractor was driven by a juvenile and there's no own damage cover on her policy, so she's negotiating with a parent to get the best outcome for all concerned. I'm absolutely not willing to have any part in that, other than to point her in the direction of parts sources and fit whatever parts arrive, if required. There's huge potential for bad feeling here and if i had the opportunity, I'd go back and tell her I don't know anything about cars and I think my neighbour has been eating strange mushrooms!
That not being possible, I'm trying to help out as best I can!

I thought I'd updated this, but it seems not.
The owner got hold of a bumper assembly, in the correct colour, and a headlamp.
It took me about an hour and a half to take off all the broken plastic, put the wing back where it should be with nice parallel panel gaps and fit the replacements. I was able to straighten the bonnet lip well enough to clear the headlight, though it's never going to win any beauty competitions.
It's double skinned and can't really be beaten properly, so it would be a sculpture in filler and I can't legally get paint any more, so she'd need to pay a paint shop. It'll do as it is, unless a bonnet pops up for small money.
One issue that remains, that actually predates the accident, is the secondary bonnet release mechanism.
The plastic lever for this is broken and the cable has been dismounted and brought out through the plastic trim, so as to be accessible when the bonnet is unlocked. The technique is to grab the cable in your fist and give it a firm tug towards the drivers side and it releases the bonnet.
I'd like to put it right, but I can't for the life of me see where it should go, nor figure out how the lever should mount.
Is there a diagram, or a picture of it, I can follow?
Thanks guys
Sparksie
