Ahh, sorry Peter... I forgot... The good Dr. Beeching ripped up all of yours back in the 60s

I rather like train travel and it's very much my choice of transport when I make the occasional trip down to Somerset...

I'm very happy to let the train take the strain as the old British Rail advert strapline used to go...

The new fleet consists of 11 10.8m BYD ADL Enviro200EV single decker buses, similar to those operated by Go-Ahead on other routes in the capital.

We ship buses from China - in the interests of the environment? Beyond irony!

I didn't notice the bus company, or the route although, having followed the link, Camberwell wasn't 1m miles away BUT, no, it wasn't one of them, it had an italianesque name in huge chrome script across the front.

Assuming, of course, that they haven't already done over 217.5 miles

Perhaps not "knowingly" but when you're travelling in a strange place you may have no idea when/where you'll next be able to buy fuel - & you just have to trust to luck.

That script doesn't look as florid as I recall. Like I said, I'll pay more attention next time I'm caught up in the bus jam at Lewisham station.

Electric buses and warmth
Came across some articles on this issue last week, looking at how to keep all-electric battery bus interiors acceptably warm (or cooled).

What was interesting was that the driving range (155mi_250km/day+) was not an issue with currently available vehicles, but heating remained so. A whole variety of solutions on offer (from old friends like Valeo and Webasto, amongst others). Interesting figure: using the traction batteries for interior heating would require an additional 2000kg of batteries to be carried.

http://www.eliptic-project.eu/news/are- ... sion-buses
https://www.busworld.org/uploads/exhibi ... -buses.pdf

The second article I found a really interesting read.

See that some of the latest BYD BE buses shipping to London are equipped with inductive under-floor recharging/top-up equipment. One of our family works as a London bus network controller, and says that one of their bus Garages is now totally electric. Whole-day battery performance is not an issue, but the 1.6-litre diesel engines fitted for heating/AC is.

The numbers of buses being manufactured from BYD China is now impressive:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BYD_K9
Interesting to see that they are now being built in the USA too, and (iirc) a new plant in south Wales.
See that LiFePO4 batteries are being used.
At least (for some UK orders), bodies from Alexander-Dennis are part of the spec; shame we can't do better.

Exciting.
