How bad an idea is this? Pug 406 Coupe...

Post by Zelandeth »

Pondering possible future daily transport for me as the fleet evolves. Not thinking imminent!

Currently digitising some of my old car magazines, and today came across the Autocar issue with their first full test of the 406 Coupe.

Remembered at that point that I did - and still do - think it's one of the nicest looking cars ever made. I'd really fancy one...and they're actually in my price range now.

I've driven one several times (we had a custard yellow one in the garage I worked at for a while, it took us a full year to sell because of the colour!)...so know they handle well and that the V6 is almost unnervingly rapid.

So...Pug 406 Coupe (has to be a V6, not fussed about manual/auto). Or Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo. Fiat has to be bright red, yellow or blue though as the exterior coloured bits inside make the whole interior work.

Which would you go for, and how likely is it that it would prove to be a massively bad idea? Seems that the prices of both of these cars can only go up it seems...

I had a 406 V6 coupe not too long ago , very nice car even with a manual box . I'd have another without a doubt .

I'd go for neither as a daily driver. It would be an exceedingly bad idea. The prices only go up because people have rose-tinted glasses.

I guess the one critical bit of info is that "daily" for me means a few K miles a year as I don't commute. Plus hoping I'll have a certain small pale blue tripod that will cover some of the local stuff too.

If I was commuting anywhere I'd just have kept the 107!

Can't argue with that logic, and yes that's pretty much the plan for the immediate future. This has been more a case of thinking out loud for the future and wondering if there are any bits of severe stupid in the idea that makes if a bad idea.

I've never had any real experience with the Coupe recently, but know a few folks who have had 406s and they've always seemed to be decent cars.

Just a shame there was never a Xantia Activa V6 Coupe...

The 406 coupé is certainly one of the best looking cars to ever hit the road.

How about a Volvo C70/C as an alternative?

I've had an Activa and a 406 coupe , I prefered the 406 out of the two , should have kept it tbh for what it stood me at .

My son has a 2.2 Hdi coupe and loves it, I have driven it and so do I. I run a 2.0. Hdi 406 estate also a brilliant car, they just don't seems to go wrong, one of the best cars Peugeot have made.

We have just returned from a holiday in Scotland and North Yorkshire, covered over 2500 miles and never missed a beat and it passed the 210,000 mile mark while we were away and averaged 60 mpg but driving like me would probably bore you to death.

Volvo is a good call actually, again a marque I've not managed to own yet.

One of the requirements I think is that it has a V configuration engine as I've not had anything that fits that description yet...Rover P6 has always been on the list, but prices have gone utterly bananas in recent years so not going to happen. Likewise the SD1, even in spite of the...variable...build quality.

In answer to a question up the page a bit, my car is a 407 coupe which is still broken but it was a phenomenal car when it was going. I have been told of an ex peugeot tech who lives locally and now works offshore whose door has been knocked by me with no answer, and in his garden is a 407 coupe, a xsara hdi and a ds3 racing. Im hoping he can fix my car. However I think the 406 coupe is a nicer car, the 407 is much bigger and more of a gt car rather than a coupe. I have never driven a 406 coupe, but have driven heaps of 406 saloons, all diesels and all the different ones, 1.9td, 2.1td, hdi 90, hdi 110 and liked every one of them, the highest mileage one was over 500,000!

Yes! I'm down to one car. A 57 plate Octavia TDI. It just works. I can take it to any garage to fix. It does 55mpg.

Peace is best.
