NPR + Parking meters

Post by Sloppysod »

It is becoming more common now days to enter you registration number into a Car park ticket machine before it spits out a ticket to stop you giving it to someone else, but does this information also get passed to the authorities as evidence that you vehicle is on the road, so they can check MOT, insurance & tax records? #-o

I doubt it very much - as far as I know it's to make more money by stopping you giving your ticket to another person as you say Stu. I think they leave the NPR stuff to the main highway cameras that are in operation and the police vehicles - which I believe are on all the time, so if it detects a vehicle in passing it alerts the copper to put his foot down and get hit ticket book ready!

We have some completely cretinous ones down here just creeping in. They are all back to front, so you now spend 15 minutes deciphering the instructions that are of course bilingual, so the writing is so small you can't read it so that it can fit on the sticker. Then when there is a suitable queue behind you, with everyone tutting away, you work out that you have to 'add time' to the machine first of all up to the amount of hours you want to stay. Then you add the reg number. Then you have to either find the slot to put in those things called coins, or a piece of plastic in the slot for card payments, or use your Apple Watch or smartphone to pay using the contactless panel.

Finally after a long pause, just when you think it's crapped out, you get your ticket and scamper away. So I always makes sure when I've put my ticket on the car windscreen and walk back into town that I give a 'tut tut' back to those that are still working it out!

It's all very Carlos Fandango - and everyone is trying to work out what to do on them. Why you cant just select the number of hours first then pay is beyond me.

The Welsh ones in Chepstow just require the last three digits of your number entered then the cash

The system at Gloucester hospital I found easier, take a ticket on entry and pay at a pay machine before leaving, the machine takes cash (banknotes or coins) or credit cards, it pulls the ticket in and returns it as a printed out receipt and to use to lift the exit bar.

My only problem with the Glos hospital carpark is the bloody price, I only went there to accompany my old friend and bring her home after the ambulance took her in, cost me £6.60.

That’s outrageous profiteering and disgusting for a Hospital, whoever manages their car park. Especially considering most are probably outpatients or visitors to those on the wards.

It's a new build multi storey and the problem they have is that Gloucester Council made all the streets around the hospital parking meter zones so the commuters used to fill the hospital car parks when they were free (before the new build), there are no concessions for visitors although there are some for patients, if you can be bothered to go through the rigmarole to get them.

They seem to have updated them now, but I had issues with the meters in Oxford a couple of years back (would have been late 13/early 14) where they demanded you input your reg.

...sadly their genius software would only accept registration numbers in the ab12abc type format! If you had a pre 2001 car, a private plate or Irish format plate you were stuffed. It just beeped and prompted you to input a valid reg number...

Got extremely annoying in a hurry.

My daughter visits several hospitals in different parts of the country in the course of her work and it seems that parking charges vary widely. The most expensive she has to pay is in Cambridge. If she arrives at 8.45 and leaves at 5.15, it costs her an eye-watering £19. Usually she's there for two days. Fortunately her company picks up the bill.

NHS Scotland a few years ago decreed that overnight, parking would be free at all hospitals.

The hospital in Aberdeen is the point that something like 80% of the bus services into the city centre converge. It's less than ten minutes from the city centre by bus.

Day before the charges were abolished it could be tricky to find a space at busy times, but you could usually get one after a few trips round the car park.

As of the day the charges went, the car park became permanently full, usually with a queue waiting to get in. Last time I was in there I wound up parking in one of the city centre pay and display car parks and getting the bus out to the hospital as it was quicker than trying to park there.

Problem being that the car park is full of cars belonging to commuters to the general area rather than patients or visitors. The fact that it's only half full at the weekends tells that story pretty well.

I was involved in travel in the area, so saw precisely how much the hospital were hanging their head against the wall trying to deal with it.

If you are driving around without one of those and the car is properly registered then you are likely to get something unpleasant through the post anyway.

Of course if you "forgot" to register it and somehow gave the wrong address to whoever you bought it from then you only need to worry about the increasingly rarely seen traffic cop.

It was mentioned on the Beeb's and Independent news sites a couple of weeks ago that there would be en enquiry into excessive parking charges at hospitals.

Staff at the very least should have free parking considering the work they do and the benefit to our society.

The reason for the charges are as Zel touched on - to deter the general public from taking up spaces needed for staff, patients and visitors.

The Newcastle RVI will in certain circumstances waive parking fees. Other hospitals may do the same.

It's obviously not working then as there doesn't seem to be any distinction between the patients, visitors seeing patients etc.
Far better to have a pass for staff unless they have a separate car park, and a daily pass for visitors available from reception I would think.

My view on that sort of thing is that if you've made a reasonable attempt to buy a ticket but are prevented from doing so, there's no need to do anything further - a bit like offering to pay for goods in a shop where the shopkeeper refuses your money.
Don't know if the law sees it that way though!
