Xantia and C5 6 speed gearbox

Unread post by c.morewood »

Does anyone know whether the Xantia hdi engine is compatible with the C5 6 speed box. I understand that the Xantia engine is the same as the C5's.

I think the C5 has used several different gearboxes in the HDI. The newer ones have 5 or 6 speeds with reverse next to 1st.

Having never driven a car with 6 speeds, I was wondering if it's worth the effort in a diesel.
Citroen must think so, or are they just following a trend?
Methinks they should spend their time improving reliability before adding extra gizmos!

Diesel engines are changing...
The 2nd generation common rail engines feel much closer to a petrol engine than a diesel engine.
In fact, you just can´t drive slowly in 4th or 5th because the engine will die.
My Xantia's 2.0HDi is at half-way (1st generation common rail) - not really a diesel and no really a petrol engine behave, but some of the new engine diesels really need a 6 or 7 speed box.
PSA is a little behind in this race, with a 2.0HDi with only 138hp, when the reference power for the 2.0liter engine is over 160hp this year, and over 180hp next year.
Of course, the only thing in common these new engines have with old diesel engines is that they use the same fuel... [:D][:0]

The XUD and HDI 8 and 16 valve engines have more in common than just fuel. The HDI 110 has the same crank as the XUD Turbo.

I agree, but I was not talking about a 2.0 110Hp but a 2.0 163Hp.
The HDi 110 is an obsolete engine.

There is an ST version of the Mondeo with a 155BHP 2.2 Litre diesel engine.
ST TDCi 2.2i 16v (155BHP)
I assume its a development of the DW12. Hopefully that engine will make its way into a Citroen at some point.
Whilst the 136bhp HDI isn't as powerful as BMW or VAG's offerings it is certainly in the same league as many other manufacturers offerings. e.g. Honda i-CTDI, Rover CTDI, Mazda, GM, Fiat etc
I've got an XUD, the HDI 110 certainly isn't obsolete, its the future.

The 2.2 TDCi engine used in the Mondeo is a completely different beast to any PSA engine.
The Mondeo's all use Ford's own diesel engines codename PUMA. They are all chain driven 16v diesel engines in capacities 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4, the latter being used only in the Transit van range along with detuned 2.0 versions. The 2.2 is pretty much just a bored out version of the 2.0 to give a bit more power.
The PUMA's are not quite as refined as the DW engines, but they put out more torque and most TDCi 130's put out at least 140BHP - I've had mine on the rollers at 143BHP.

I had a six-speed Laguna diesel estate last time I was in Belgium, and coming home, I miss sixth gear in my Xantia......

Why Six if you can have Seven?! [}:)]
Most newer Mercedes diesels, like the new 3.0 liter V6 Diesel with 224Hp and 510Nm torgue! [:0], will come along have 7-speed gear-boxes!

Are these the Mercs with two reverse gears too?
Regarding the Ford Diesel - it's a shock compared to a nice old 1.9 PSA TD. When I first drove my Pug it took a while to get used to the Turbo lag but blimey! You had to be very careful in the Mondeo! Very sharp power delivery too. I was glad to get back into my old Peugeot after that and I had the Mondeo for three weeks.

Thats exactly why I asked the question RDD I used to drive the Laguna diesel with the 6 speed box. I was just wondering if the C5's 6 speed box would fit and if so, how much trouble would it be changing it?

Looks like you're still waiting for an answer! I got mine! Sorry I can't help you.
Thread has morphed into various diesel engine developments.

I think Citroën is just following a trend started by the German car manufacturers - in Germany you can actually use a 6th gear on the autobahns, and it cuts fuel consumption - something that the EU is promoting, much to the Germans disgust! They have also done a "Bush" regarding particulate filters they "may" "damage" the German car industry's "market advantage"!

When a competitor adds a feature to their cars, you HAVE to add it to yours, just so that you can say to the customer we've got feature X. It doesn't matter how useful or stupid the feature is, once one car gets it everybody else copies.
6 speed gearboxes and swiveling headlights are both examples of competitors following each other. Citroen re-introduced swiveling headlights because their competitors introduced them.
