Facebook, What's going on?

Post by Gibbo2286 »

I've been logging into Facebook almost daily for a very long time using an automatic log in programme, RoboForm.

Yesterday no joy, Facebook doesn't recognise my email, username or password no matter how I try to log in.

Just got this in an email,

Upload a photo of yourself
To get back on Facebook, upload a photo that clearly shows your face. Make sure that the photo is well-lit and isn't blurry. Don't include other people in the shot.
Once we've confirmed that it's you, we'll permanently delete the photo. It won't appear on your profile.

So how can they possibly identify me from a photo, they've never had a photo of me? I don't upload my photo on those type sites.

Scam/identity theft. Next you'll know it's been used on a forged document.
Report it.

Facebook are almost a law unto themselves and you have little choice but to comply or face a long-winded game of email tennis trying to get a real support person to help. Meanwhile, you remain locked out until you satisfy their captcha bot.

AFAIK, they won't know if the photo is of you or not, but that's not exactly what this "test" is about.

From reading some reports it seems that after you upload a photo they unlock the account and then a short time later they permanently close the account! Nice. I'm soooo glad I have absolutely nothing to do with FB.

Seems like a heap of misery to me.

I had a similar thing on Monday - to try and claim my pension online, after the usual verification questions I was required to go to an independent verification site that after email and phone verifications, I was supposed to download an app, photograph the computer screen and a barcode thingy then upload it to them.
Gave up at that point as my phone is not set up for anything like that, all I do is text and if severely pushed phone someone.

That someone in this case was the pension service. The lady was lovely but very little progress, as usual.

When I claimed my pension last year I did it all over the phone. It was a remarkably easy procedure and I think it was all sorted in the one phone call. I opted for a weekly payment into my bank account rather than a monthly payment - this is still available although not widely publicised.

I was still working after I reached 65 I could have deferred taking the pension but decided not to so, for a short time, I was getting my salary as well. I put the extra money into a savings account to draw on later. Deferring the date would only increase the pension by 1% for every 9 weeks it's not taken. Not worth it I reckoned.

Anyway, that's my experience.

I worked in Sweden for years which has made the claim awkward but was going OK until she asked if I was married, single etc.
I am a widower so it had to be passed to another department.
She wanted to know the date of our wedding, which I got wrong by five days - the irony there being that I was the only one who remembered our anniversary, my wife always forgot.
So the marriage licence has to be posted off to them - £6.50 data post! and another address entirely.

I did originally contact them three years ago, they rejected the email so I used snail mail, no reply.
Reminded them after a year - no response,
Reminded them in April this year and it has been floundering around since then.

I found this short video last night and thought it interesting - A Panorama 30 min documentary, about the dark side of smartphones - but focussing on social media - and interestingly a lot on Facebook and the 'unscripted' key admission from a Facebook founder last year:

"Getting us hooked has been the Company's key intention from the start"

It covers the very unfortunate suicide of a young lad - and shows how the post 'Like' feature can also have a negative impact on their perception of how they see their social standing with other users.

It is quite worrying today to see people of all ages walking around glued to their smart phone screens like mindless automatons!

There's some science experiments too suggesting that certain features being added (like graphical animations as rewards) can be just as bad a drug, producing dopamine, leading to addiction.....
