This is a continuation from the brake thread below, for anyone who hasn't read it yet to get up to speed:

The good news is the brake work all went pretty smoothly on Saturday.
Sure enough, the old pads were down to about 3mm of material and the discs were pretty awful, especially around the inside:
The pad carrier whose two mounting bolts I thought might be troublesome to get out on the left hand side wasn't. I just used my large torque wrench (as I don't have a breaker bar) and my standard T55 socket, no problem. They were a bit tight all the way out but once I cleaned the threads in the hole they went back in easily finger tight.
The old pads were wedged into the carrier so tight (rusted ?) that it took a cold chisel and some destruction of pad material to get them out! On the contrary, the new pads were an absolute perfect fit, snug, but I was able to push them back and forth freely just with my fingers. (Unlike the pads that I fitted to the Ion recently where I had to file the ears down quite a bit to get them to fit at all!)
For £15 a disc and about £30 for a full set of pads I'm very happy:
As I mentioned in the other thread, the rear brakes needed a clean and overhaul as well, and the pad locating pin snapped on one side when I tried to remove it, so I bought the little kit that has the pin, nuts, washers, spring clip and stone shield for both sides, on the assumption that the other side would break when i tried to remove it - which it duly did!
Unlike the first side where the pin broke close to the nut making it easy to remove, this one broke half way up the pin, making it impossible to directly extract the pin as the nut was rusted on and difficult to access.
In the end I gave up on any fancy tricks and just used a claw hammer to progressively bend the nut/pin at the blind end util I could thread the now semi-circle pin out the wrong end.

That pin is as soft as butter, it's no wonder it snapped once the nut rusted to the housing!
Both pads on that side were rusted to the housing so out they came, everything cleaned up then back in again with the new pins and shields, and brakes bled. Only a little bit of air from the rear brakes.
I took it for a drive expecting it to take a while to bed in (the Ion brakes did) but no, they were working reasonably well immediately which has not been my general experience with new brakes, and within about 10 miles of driving with a few quick stops they felt fully broken in.
And all I can say is WOW, are these brakes good now!

Best Xantia brakes I've ever had by far. Previously they were "OK", but they did vibrate when braking from high speed if they were hot (probably all that rust around the middle) and they just didn't seem as sensitive as they should be. A bit "dead" feeling and requiring quite a bit of pedal pressure. I had a similar issue on my old 2.0i which despite lots of work on the brakes never felt right.
These are now really, really impressive. Instead of getting nothing as you press the pedal harder then too much braking, they start responding very smoothly and gently at first but rapidly brake very hard as you push the pedal harder. Very controllable, sensitive, and immense stopping power when you push a bit harder. Very happy.

Hopefully it'll wind the needle off the brake tester at the garage during the MOT.
While I was under the car I noticed two annoying things. One was that one of the brake/suspension lines under the rear beside the height corrector looked like it had literally exploded with rust at a bend!

I realised it would get spotted in the MOT as it was in a really obvious place and looked bad so I bought some black hammerite to sand and paint it. I was actually concerned enough about the remaining steel left that I was unwilling to sand the pipe while the car was pressurised - so I fully depressurised the suspension and pressure regulator before attempting to sand it just in case so I didn't get an eye full of high pressure oil...
While I was at it I did quite a few other spots where it was starting to rust on bends - it seems like the enamel must have cracked on some of the bends ever so slightly when manufactured allowing water in to eventually rust them. All tided up now though and protected from getting any worse:
I then noticed one other problem that I wasn't expecting - a noisy hole in the exhaust that I only just replaced less than 4 years ago!
To be fair, it was only a cheap £70 exhaust, and the car has sat a lot in the last year which is never good for exhaust rust due to pooled condensation sitting in the pipes.
You can't hear it while driving but certainly can from outside near the rear of the car, and I'm sure it will get bigger quickly...so I'm now faced with a dilemma. I want to book it in for an MOT in 2 weeks but do I:
1) Feign ignorance and see if it just gets a warning and sort it out once the MOT is safely secured...
2) Put some kind of patch on it (goo and metal strap ?) to silence it and slow down the deterioration until I can get a chance to replace it properly.
3) Order another exhaust for it - the joint between the middle silencer and cat is in really bad shape too and doesn't have long for this world, so it would really need a whole new system from cat tail back. After £74 for brake parts a minimum of £80 for even a cheap exhaust will be a hard sell with the other half just at the moment for a car that doesn't get used much.
I'm not equipped to do exhaust work for the inevitable problems that crop up fitting an aftermarket one where they need tweaking (nor do I have time in the next few weeks) so I think I'd probably just have to ask the local garage doing the MOT for me (who are pretty good) to fit it for me...
