Yes, good point Mike. It’s just that the VIN is returning some weird info and may be why some parts suppliers are also having difficulty in ascertaining correct components. It won’t be the first time I have written to PSA to get them to correct the database when I find obvious errors and fair play they always respond and correct them.

Just to re-assure, that Walker are a long standing exhaust manufacturer, so should be no concerns on quality.

w.r.t Cat replacement on C5's, I've noticed that where the OEM tended to be a one-piece pipe from the swivel joint back to the back box (incorporating the cat) some after market replacements tend to be available in two sections (front section covering swivel joint to only half way along the centre pipe, with a slip joint at that location and a seperate section from the slip-joint to the back box joint).
This means that the centre part of the exhaust could be replaced in two sections.
I think this was more to do with the back-box joint, than the front section - the back box joint tending to suffer from rot over the years, meaning under the OEM design you would then have had to fork out for a replacement cat (£!) even if the cat was fine.

Last year I had to replace the Cat on my C5mk1 and I bought a complete replacement as per the oem design, but when I took the old one off, I found it was two piece - the rear section was 'new' while the front was oem and had obviously been cut enable the rear section to the replaced without renewing the the cat, as I've described above.

I can't recall who I bought my replacement cat from (might have been autosessive?) but it was very cheap, in my hands within less than 24 hours, good quality and fitted perfectly. I think I linked it in my C5 profile...?

That makes a lot of sense Iain, and probably a good idea to get a 2 part one in that case - the price of these things is excessive enough without needing to change the whole thing unnecessarily!

Good afternoon gentlemen, a day of rain yesterday but now the sun is out again : )

The new Cat arrived today, not a bad service considering how far down the country we are.

Tomorrow is fitting day, the good Lord willing.

I intend driving it up on ramps at the front, then jacking the rear up and sliding a second set of ramps under the rear wheels.

Pictures to include my feet : )

There may be another reason for the 2 piece front-rear pipe; delivery jumps from £15ish to £60ish, or it did when I ordered one for my Xant 3 years ago

Good evening gentleman.

The replacement part will not fit because the extra section of pipe they supply after the cat finishes in a flange connector, this was made to fit a similar flange on the pipe just before the back box.

There is no flange connection just before my back box, the whole system was made in one piece.

On the new system there is a joint shortly after the cat that fits into the rear section of pipe they supply.

I may cut the old rear section to meet this point and make a sleeve joint from the old front part of the cat to engine section, according to callipers it is a suitable diameter to sleeve the two pipes I wish to join : )

I do have a Mig welder but not the skill yet to weld this kind of joint.

From looking at the diagrams Marc kindly supplied, there is a sleeve joint made for some versions, if the section of pipe I cut out from the old cat to engine does not do the job, one of those should.

Is fire cement different from exhaust paste ?

I know not to use it before the cat : )

I have left it for today with WD40 on the two sensors and the front clamp.

Also noticed one side of the hanger is missing, including the bracket to the under body.

Update I think I have some high temperature silicon I use on the wood burner chimney, looking online that is better as it does not set rock hard : )

Good evening Marc,

On the diagram below that you kindly supplied, it shows no 12 exhaust pipe bracket left.

The left bracket is present on my car, but the right or drivers side is missing.

There is a blank or plastic washer in the end of the right hand part from the pipe that would push into the rubber.

Is there a different part number for the right hand side bracket, or is it perhaps not fitted ?

Or would you just quote the same part number with right hand side ?

There is another fixing just before the rear box and another just after it.

It looked perfectly secure with the one fitting, but the three bolts are there for a second bracket on the right hand side.

We have the new cat fitted and have cut the original rear section pipe to mate up to it.

I cut the pipe roughly to remove the old cat, then fitted the new one and marked the correct place to cut the rear pipe.

We had to then remove the rear pipe and back box so that we could make a nice straight cut : )

Also made a sleeve to join the two pipes from part of the old cat engine side pipe.

It is a good fit over the join, not sure whether to cut a slit to allow the clamps to compress it, or if there will be enough give in the sleeve as it is.

Good afternoon gentlemen 30.9c here : )

Just been for a two mile run, Mad Dogs and Englishmen : )

The new cat is all fitted, I will be changing the clamp at the join for the type with two layers and integral bolts that protrude less.

The good news, and the not so good news is that replacing the cat has stopped a noise like dry peas rattling in a can, but not the other rattle.

The peas rattling sound could be produced by knocking the cat, garages and previous owners also attributed the rattle to the cat.

It sounds like the heat shield, but I have been under and tried pushing every where.

I read last night on another forum, about the steering rack heat shield rattling ?

Not sure as to its location at the moment, perhaps the bottom engine cover has to be off first.

I have uploaded a video with the rattle recorded.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated, apart from the Swan Vesta one, its third party only : )

The other cat a neighbours is called Pebbles : )

God Bless Spiff,

Hi Spiff - just catching up on posts - here are the 3 exhaust diagrams and parts for you all together. There is no left and right flexible mounting - it just shows the left one - but normally they do in fact show separate part numbers for left and right / LHD or RHD parts if they are materially or functionally different.

You'll need to click on these to magnify and clarify them

FYI, my Mk 1 C5 HDi has a rubber mounting on both sides on that CAT mount, so I just looked up the parts diagram on service.citroen.

The parts diagram shows a rubber mount both sides in the parts diagram for my car - so this confirms your car is correct only having one (if it was meant to have two, two would be shown on the diagram, they don't miss them out/list them separately).
