Faulty anti pollution warning light

Post by RPWC »

This came on earlier after I disconnected the maf, seeing as the smoke was back, but not as bad. Re connected maf, warning still there, what does it mean! Blocked Cat or dpf?

Went for hard drive, dropped into 3rd, revved to over 3000rpm, into 4th ,same ,then top, same thing, drove at 80mph and over 3000 rpm for about 5 miles, then same on the way back, turned off, disconnected battery for about 5 mins, recnnected battery, started up and fault gone, but it’s still stinking of sulphur, could it be cat related?

You are more likely to get a good answer if you give us the diagbox fault codes, otherwise we are all just guessing.

Rich - I believe you have it booked in this week with the dealer for a diagnostic - ask for a printout of the faults for reference. Just make sure all the pipes and hoses are secure first to eliminate any unnecessary faults.

Now for confirmation - according to your VIN, there is NO DPF on your dispatch. So it is possible that there is a blocked EGR / pipe/ fuelling / air / oil issue. I don't know if this variation of engine suffers from the carbon deposit issue shown here with clear pictures:

Hopefully the diagnostic will help - but if you think you have bought a lemon - return it or get it fixed under the warranty (I think you said runs until July sometime on your other thread).

Normal behaviour for the EML - it comes on for a fault, then if the fault goes away it stays on for about 5 starts, then goes out. The EML may linger for a second or so after start up to indicate there are stored fault codes.

it won't smell of sulphur - there isn't any worth speaking of in road fuels anymore - and the CAT a on a diesel is a simple reduction CAT to reduce NOX. It might smell of partially burnt diesel if it's not combusting properly. I wonder if perhaps this has suffered like someone else's did recently with a cambelt failure, which has knocked the position of the cam lobes out. I'd be pushing for my money back TBH.....

Marc, not going to the dealer, just my regular garage. Richard, the warranty only covers engine gearbox and diff failure. Its been fine up until the lsst 10 days. I cant ask for my money back as had it 3 months and that leaves me without a van

Cambelt failure? They are good for 100k miles? mine has just 88k not to say it hasnt failed before though. I spoke to the dealer I bought from and he is going away for 3 weeks holiday but has told me to msg him after the diagnostic check , this is getting done tomorrow. Also the van idles lumpy on first start up, ok once given a bit of throttle

Today there has been no smoke, the smell has been not as strong, after work I took it for a good hard blast, driving it like I nicked it
Keeping the revs above 3k as much as possible,( saw a thread on the net about giving the system a good clear out), using the gears, about 10 miles one way, part single carriageway, part dual. The return trip was 15 miles of dual carriageway, sat at 75/80 mph and 3_3300rpm.temp guage sitting about 90° no loss of power ran perfect but since the eml fault there has been a tapping from right side of engine. I will update tomorrow after the diagnostic tests.

Update . well the diagnostic showed faulty air intake sensor and my mechanic said an injector is leaking causing the tapping sound . been quoted 152 +vat to remove clean test and re seal all 4. Does that sound reasonable? Can get the one done for £70+ vat

I was going to suggest an injector Rich - new from PSA these are exchange £358.49!

Might be worth getting an online quote from these mobile fuel injector people for comparison.

If it's a faulty injector then there's the cost of adding that on too though.

I had mine cleaned and tested, one refurbished, for £120.
I believe it was done by the diesel specialist in Beamish.

That was about four/five years ago.

I had the ones on the previous C5 done there but then they turned a bit awkward by the time I got the current one - perhaps they didn't like the bloke who was seeing to my car.
