PSA/Renault News..
Someone from PSA was on wake up to money this morning, so I thought I would see what they were up to from their news page.
Well in the race for the future of personal transportation they have achieved a remarkable accolade.
They have been awarded the "International Engine of the Year 2018" and proudly boast how much they have spent on R&D to produce it......(yes its petrol!)

Sounds familiar...
from wikipedia:
Which many owners would describe as the most expensive boat-anchor of all time, suffering from numerous recalls and other issues requiring expensive (and regular) repairs. On 25 June 2014 [the PSA/BMW] 1.6-litre turbo Prince engine won its eighth consecutive International Engine of the Year Award in the 1.4 to 1.8-litre category.

Interesting that it has a GPF (presumably standing for Gas Particle Filter) to reduce particulate emissions. The particulates are no doubt a problem now that they are using direct injection for the (petrol) fuel. Direct injection of fuel increases the quantity of smaller particulates compared to medium size ones in diesel engines whilst increasing the efficiency and the same must apply to the petrol equivalent.
They hid the swept capacity of the engine quite well. I could only see one instance of a mention in the specification table at the end.

If you were wondering what the other winners were in the 2018 International engine of the year awards
Here they are.
The dinosaurs with their heads in the sand awards 2018
Just for internal combustion engines of course.

The HDI engine received a number of similar awards when it was launched, deservedly so IMHO, but rather ironic now...

Non other then the CEO of Citroen Linda Jackson
Are the PSA family a bit dysfunctional or do they just need a little time to all pull in the same direction? er churning out as many ICE's as possible from new factories in Poland and Hungary!

Re: PSA/Renault News..
To be fair to PSA they did announce this earlier in the year
How far behind are PSA?
Regards Neil
Yes PSA are starting the design of its future electric motors.“Nidec-PSA emotors” Joint Venture created by Groupe PSA and Nidec starts the design of its future electric motors
Forty engineers have already been recruited and joined the JV headquarters in Carrières sous Poissy, near Paris. By end of summer, thirty more engineers are expecting to join this site where a dedicated R&D area has been created. They will design new traction electric motors to be produced in Tremery plant, Moselle area, in France, and integrated in Mild-hybrid (“MHEV”), Electric Vehicles (“EV”) and Plug-in Hybrid (“PHEV”) vehicles.

Re: PSA/Renault News..
From wikipedia....
"Mild hybrids are generally internal combustion engines equipped with an electric machine (one motor/generator in a parallel hybrid configuration) allowing the engine to be turned off whenever the car is coasting, braking, or stopped, yet restart quickly. Mild hybrids may employ regenerative brake and some level of power assist to the internal combustion engine (ICE), but mild hybrids do not have an exclusive electric-only mode of propulsion."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mild_hybrid
So that makes it stop/start technology with a little booster motor ? Wow, PSA are really pushing the boundaries on that one.........
Not so much 'the bleeding edge of technology', more - the bleedin' unimaginative technology.

Re: PSA/Renault News..
Well PSA's Mild-Hybrid Quest is going to be good news for Punch Powertrain and their Chinese Owners who will supply transmissions to PSA . (Yinyi Group acquired 100% of the shares of Punch Powertrain in 2016)
PSA selects partner for mild-hybrid technology
Not everyoine will find this little bit of Company history of Punch Powertrain interesting, but suffice to say it starts with the DAF variomatic transmission, and currently thrives, expands and acquires under Chinese ownership.
