Site formatting updated

Post by xantia_v6 »

I have applied an update (slightly experimental) to this site which requires that you refresh your browser cache. On a PC this can be accomplished by pressing ctrl-f5.
On other devices, you may need to manually delete cached data for this site. You do not need to clear cookies.

The changes themselves are fairly minor, with the intention of improving the appearance and operation of the site on devices with small screens (phones).

You will notice that the header buttons are now located outside of the header image.
The header image is no longer vertically stretched when viewed on a phone, but retains its original proportions.

Please report any other changes that you notice, but please remember to cleear your browser cache first!

Thanks, that is what I expect to see.

Someone else has pointed out that the forum name is not working as a link. I will fix that, but the header image does work as a link to the forum index.

I cannot get it to work properly and get to the page above showing unread posts etc. I do not know why you cannot just leave things alone that were working perfectly well. Its a lot of unnecessary hassle for me and i am rapidly getting fed up uf this.

Tell us which browser and OS you are using, and we should be able to help.

Can anyone suggest why my replies from the forum keep ending up in the junk mail file?

Thanks

If you are referring to the email notifications Peter, it may be because of the number of them coming through and your email programme / provider is identifying them as junk or spam. Just go to one of them and right click it and select the ‘this is not Junk’ if you have that option or similar. Or you may be able to move a few into your inbox from the junk folder so it doesn’t do the same again.

You could also put the FF email address that sends the messages to you in your contacts list, Peter.

It’s only taken about 3 hours for me to find out how to get this sorted on my phone. When you suffer from fibromyalgia and get total brain fog as I do every time I have to change stuff on the phone or tablet it causes me totally abnormal levels of stress, and the more stressed I get the worse my thoughts get. I wish you wouldn’t bugger about with stuff that is working fine. I may try sorting the tablet tomorrow, one problem is the phone is an iPhone with chrome and the tablet is a Samsung and it says Samsung internet and works differently

I think that instructions for clearing the Samsung browser cache are here: https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobi ... xy-device/

As to why the site formatting change was needed, it is a long story, but this forum uses phpBB software which has an upgrade about once a year. We also use the we_universal "style" (theme) that was written by someone else and given to the open-source community. The original author of we_universal stopped maintaining it about 3 years ago, and the subsequent updates have been made by various developers and forum operators (including me), but these versions have failed to meet the "quality standards" to be included in the database of official phpBB styles. I am working through a list of issues to upgrade the style to the required standard, and one of them was related to the scaling of the forum header on small screens, which was always a bit awkward, and after many patches was getting difficult to maintain. This update moves the header image from the page background to the foreground which makes it easier to control the relative position of surrounding elements, such as buttons.

The reason that the browser cache needs to be cleared is that the browser cache remembers that the image is in the background, so with the new foreground location, the browser tries to render the image twice. Unfortunately there is no means for a web site to force the clearing of the browser cache, it must be done manually by each user.

They are nearly all arriving in the 'junk mail, in fact that's where I am reading this one from. I have tried marking them not spam and moving them to the inbox, makes no difference. I search the junk mail for them now. This the only forum that its happening on, practically everything else is junk mail.

Depending on your email server and your local client, there should be a trace of WHY any email was classed as junk. You should find in your email client an option to "view headers" or view source" of an email. If you can find that and copy the result and forward it to me, I will take a look.

No, that is thee page header for the web page that is displaying the email, not the header of the mail itself.

I don't use Outlook, so not sure of the easiest way, but maybe method 3 in this link is the right one?...
