Might even catch a herd of them there?

Spotted one of these tonight..a Lexus Hybrid. Yes a Lexus for the Lexus driver looking to save their pennies.

Its odd in that its self-charging......no plug in.

Explore the smart innovations that strike the perfect balance between efficiency and a rewarding driving experience. From the moment you take to the wheel, your Lexus Self-Charging Hybrid is powered up and ready to go, and will charge itself automatically while driving.

Well I had a little explore of the Lexus website for the "Hybrid" trying to find its electric only range but gave up not very obvious if its there at all. Probably because you will be hard pushed to actually drive it in EV Mode for any length of time.

Can't beat the forums for telling you like it is

When the battery level drops to 1 bar or even 2 left, the engine automatically kicks in and stays up to power the car as well as charge the battery. I had this happen to me once during a traffic jam.

Now with the EV mode, it is impossible to have it on all the time. once you get past 27mph or push the pedal way into the white area, you will get a beep and a notification on the multi information display saying "EV mode deactivated, Excessive speed" or something like that.

So then you have to go back into the menu to activate it again...lol. The car really doesnt want to be in EV mode, but I am surprised how much of the pedal you can push before it deactivates

1. This is a petrol engined car, with no facilty to derive power from a cleaner and more efficient source (ie the electricity grid).
2. Manufacturers of these keep very quiet about battery-only range, and this is particularly the case with Toyota. They also do not make available any data about how much of the time these cars are running electrically.
3. Essentially, it is about prolonging ICE engine production, under the guise of offering a greener alternative.
4. The country with the most chronic urban air pollution problem, China, has told Toyota they see no place for these vehicles for tackling city air quality issues.
End of.

A non plugin hybrid like this is just a petrol/diesel car that can perform regenerative braking and thus recover braking energy to accelerate again after stopping. This can give a significant increase in MPG in what is still essentially an ICE car, thus are just what manufacturers are looking for to prolong the sale life of ICE based cars.

They can't drive any significant distance electric only as the only way of charging the battery is through regenerative braking, and the battery is tiny anyway. (Just a couple of kWh, which would only equate to a few miles of range) As far as I know the electric motor is only used to perform regenerative braking, and help accelerate the car from a standstill, once up to speed the ICE kicks in, or if you are accelerating hard, was running the whole time in tandem with the electric motor for maximum power.

No different to the very first Prius more than a decade ago! Doesn't qualify for my definition of an electric car if you can't plug it in and are thus deriving 100% of your motive energy from burning petrol/diesel...

When the first Prius came out in the 2000's it was an innovative and practical way to increase MPG, but it's obsolete technology today in an era of BEV's and plug in hybrids where the measurement of MPG itself is becoming anachronistic.
