And the same goes for petrol........... I think! Way back in the dim & distant past when I joined the army, the workshops had bowls of petrol in which to wash the grease off our hands. We used the petrol around four times each day, wiped clean with a handful of cotton waste, then washed in water with a liberal sprinkle of Vim. Rightly or wrongly I blame that on my present condition of having to have melanomas cut out and skin grafts put in. Right now I'm nursing procedure number six, but the graft has failed and it's taking a lot of treatment to heal. If you have a strong stomach here's what it's like three weeks post op.

John,
That's an appalling account, and a complete lack of duty of care by those above you, who should have been better informed - even then.
Swarfega was put on the U.S. banned products list a long time ago, for being hazardous to skin and IIRC a cause of dermatitis and allergies. It was originally sold as an upholstery cleaner for vinyl seats, but then marketed for wider use. My father was fiercely allergic to it, and suffered cracked skin for decades after he used it.
Remember . . . if a substance is capable of dissolving organic, oily, greasy, sticky, substances like paint, glue, tar, adhesives, etc., which it does (if memory serves) by disrupting and splitting apart the molecular chains of the unwanted goo, then think what it might be doing to the molecular structure of your skin, and, by absorption, to what lies underneath.
So, please, no petrol, diesel, acetone, benzene, or other similar solvents on the skin, nor to substances containing those things. Watch out also with contact with both new and used lubricating oils. Even if nothing happens initially, repeated exposure and contact can lead to skin etc becoming sensitised, so reactions become more severe.
These and other substances are not referred to as bio-disruptors for nothing.

Re: Hand Cleanser & Other Tools
I think the Russians who made the video in the other post on refilling an additive pouch ought to take note of the possible consequences of this. They don’t even bother wearing gloves and the additive is all over their hands. I suspect is is probably a lot more carcinogenic too!

That was my hand cleaner of choice in my later years. In fact when I moved on to teaching, we had it by the sinks in the workshops. Nitrile gloves were unheard of.

So here's my 83 year old hands after over 60 years of Swarfega & mechanics right from the days of grease on every working part until today,.
