400 bhp, extra fuel tank, 6 years planning :rofl2:

My Xantia 110 bhp diesel has managed faster than that, albeit elsewhere, and on less than half the fuel. All this prat needed to do was drive across Germany instead, no extra fuel tank, no radar detectors, no flirting with speed cameras, no special planning, no press coverage, third of the fuel cost, happens every day.

I think this young man and his associates have probably achieved what they set out to do...

Achieve a bit of publicity/notoriety/controversy by doing (imo of course) a pointless/useless/meaningless/selfish/reckless stunt of no value whatsoever. Part of me would would wish the appropriate comeuppance to check any smugness or pride in his "great achievement" (sarcasm emoticon required) he may stupidly feel.

Meanwhile our own local news reported that a team from Newcastle University, have been able to 3D print corneas in 10 minutes after painstaking research, and announced the fact this week. Further progress in bringing these into use will take another 5 years and be dependant on securing funding,

What deserves the greater publicity? What gets the most publicity?

Well unfortunately I fear the "stupid stunt" more often than not wins.

I think a slightly more interesting Land's End John O'Groats challenge would be the best time on only a single tank of fuel.

Some people might trickle along at 40 mph, but the best result might still involve marginally over the speed limit.

My car doesn't have a remaining range prediction though, which would be some help.

ISTR an attempt to travel LEJOG on just a tankful of fuel a few years. Can't remember anything more except for the fact that the driver lost some time, and therefore fuel, somewhere and he didn't quite make it.

Does anyone know Dominic Irvine and Charlie Mitchell?

Thought not....no wall to wall coverage in the leading daily papers like our Cunning Stunt in an Audi.

More to admire, and slightly higher up the scale of great achievement. :-D

Last year BBC South Today transport correspondent Paul Clifton and an engineer from Honda took a Honda Jazz uphill from Land's End to John O'Groats on one tank of petrol. They managed 94mpg and 844 miles out of one tank. They aimed for a steady 40mph to get best economy.

The plot has died, and been buried in a plot at the local allotments.
