Kubrick's 2001
I suddenly felt very old this morning, when I found out that 2001, A Space Odessy is to be re-released in cinemas, to mark its - wait for it - 50th year since release!

Re: Kubrick's 2001
It's not its first re-release as I went to watch it on the big screen (again) a couple of years ago. They even had the intermission to buy ice creams or whatever!

One of my favourite films, but it helps to read the book, unless one has, as I may have done in my student days, partaken of fragrant cigarettes.
Re: Kubrick's 2001
I was a bit surprised to see a trailer for this last night, considering It was on the TV again only a few months ago.

Re: Kubrick's 2001
Not at its best on anything other than a full-size cinema screen! After all this time, it's still hauntingly impressive, not least the use of music and sound.
While at college, we shot (for a Rag Week) a short spoof of the ape discovering the tool-possibilities of the bone, all edited to sync up with the opening bars of Also Sprach... I still have the short reel of 16mm film, some of it shot in slow-motion: would be good to transfer it to DVD.

Re: Kubrick's 2001
There is a game that I play a LOT that has nods to 2001; A Space Odyssey. The original "Elite" had, as the music for the Docking Computer, "The Blue Danube". Elite: Dangerous (a descendant of Elite, and developed by one of the original programmers) has the same music, and (in Super Cruise (the interplanetary drive)) the top speed of 2001c!

Re: Kubrick's 2001
Have to admit I'm looking forward to this - it's a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
To be fair, nothing whatsoever could be going on the whole time and I'd still enjoy myself just looking at all the details in the sets etc. That "1960s 21st century" style is a major weakness of mine, and is a major inspiration for some of my own decor plans for the future.
Yes...I went to see Back to the Future when they re-showed that a couple of years back too. What was lovely was that everyone there was there because they liked the film...so there was nobody talking or faffing with their phones the whole way through!

Re: Kubrick's 2001
This is one of my favourite movies, although not one I can sit to watch from start to finish to be honest, as it is so long and slow, so the thought of seeing it in a theatre is intriguing as it really does require a large screen viewing to appreciate, and I've only ever seen it on TV, in the weird compressed presentation of the DVD/Blu-ray release.
The aspect ratio is so wide in this movie that to fit it into a more "normal" aspect 1.85 or 2.35 ratio for DVD/Blu-ray only the middle of the picture is at the correct aspect ratio and the far left/right 1/3rd of the picture is horizontally squashed as if by a fish eye lens. This looks really bad on many panning shots. Seeing it (hopefully) without this effect would be a first for me.
I think I'd have to go see it by myself though as my other half thinks it's the most boring old tosh, and I certainly wouldn't be taking a 2 year old along either...

Ah, boo! Looks like it is a very limited release not a general release, so I won't get to see it! Pah...

Re: Kubrick's 2001
You must find a good cinema, Simon. Wonder whether it will get shown at an Imax (although it was originally shot on 70mm stock, for CinemaScope screening) near you?
Original sound was 6-track magnetic (for 70mm), 4-track for 35mm.

Re: Kubrick's 2001
There is an Imax in Glasgow although I haven't been to it in a few years. I don't think it's coming to the UK at all sadly, unless anyone has some better information ?
