I-Spy Classic Cars

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Anyone spot any classics this weekend?

Meantime here's a front view of my Friday Spot. Lovely. The owner I suspect was from the Netherlands. As I have subsequently found out the Netherlands have a particular series of registration numbers for imported classic cars (or "Oldtimers" as they like to describe them)

The DZ prefix identifies them as being over 40 years old at the time of import. They also use a prefix of YA YB or YD to identify imported classic cars younger that 40 years (Youngtimers!)

Spotted a Reliant 3-wheeler and a positively gorgeous near-concours Daytona Yellow MKIII Cortina GXL at NVCF (Vintage Wireless festival) yesterday...

The old MKIII Cortina looks absolutely sensational these days... One for Ford's better designs... That and the MKI Escort - possibly the best looking Fords ever - along with the Classic Capri and the Corsair...

Well it was F-Registration (1988) which makes it about 30 years old and a fairly rare spot.

and its name...a double entendre with a french twist.

So what did I spot, brace yourself

Same here. I missed out on the 3-litre: I think they were just too new (expensive) when I was in my Hydrolastic phase. Did manage to own 1100, 1300, and even a 1970 Mini 1000. The Mini was a bit odd and 'choppy' on its fluid base, and not as good as Moulton's rubber. Hydrolastic was really very good, especially on long wheelbase cars, so the 3-litre could have been quite something.

Other than a Citroen, the Austin 3ltr is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever been it.

I don't recall mine being particularly heavy on fuel but then I had been running Austin Westminsters and Wolseley 6/110s prior to that.............and had my own petrol forecourt. :)

Mine was RFC300J but I'd guess it's long gone by now.

The 2912CC engine (a new 7 main bearing unit shared only with the MGC) produced 125BHP - not an awful lot for such a large car - and could propel the 3-Litre to 60MPH in 17 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 100MPH (the fuel being generously sloshed in through a pair of SU 1.75" carburettors).

Blimey. Is that a set of misprints?

I owned a couple of Triumph 2.5 PI in the 80s, the first with an H reg. Same sort of power, but I'm sure it could reach 60 faster than 17 seconds, and probably the 2000 would too.

Nice to see the Austin 3-Litre getting a bit of an airing with some additional information. Part of the interest of the "spotting" of classic cars is finding out a bit more about them, Have to say over the last couple of days with the sun shining I have come across loads, and the owners I have found are absolutely delighted to talk about their cars if you show an interest.

So first off today on our trip out I spotted a beautiful Volvo Amazon with German plate, in the car park of a pub. Pulled in, got out and asked if it was OK to take a photo. Then proceeded to have a very pleasant chat about the Amazon and his trip over here with three other friends who all had Porsches.

Gave him my fascinating facts about Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary in 1965 being the first to use Amazon's as Police cars in the UK.

All very pleasant and had to apologise to his companions because I was far more interested in the Amazon than the Porsches!

So here it is

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Yesterday was a fest of cabriolets/convertibles/roadsters whatever you like to call them.

Here's the list

E-Type Jaguar, Mini, Jaguar (silver newish thing), Saab, Morgan Plus 4 and this one which would be my choice of the bunch

The SAAB was an unusual colour, but interesting with co-ordinated leather interior, and probably my second-favourite!
