Phone scammer.

Post by Gibbo2286 »

Just had a phone call, a recorded message, woman with an American accent saying "This is BT technical services, your broadband line will be terminated today at ?pm, to retain your service press 1........etc."

As I'm not with BT for any service clearly some sort of scam, 1471 gives the caller's number as 01724536875.

Normally it is "Charles from Windows Help Line"

Recorded systems are unfair, you cannot keep them online for 1/2hr before you tell them you have an Apple (which I don't :) )

Someone keeps phoning about the 'fault' on my Tiscali broadband, haven't been with Tiscali for about 10 years, you would think if they want to scam you they would get their information up to date.

I don't like recorded ones either. My usual reply to the live one is "so, what are you wearing baby?"... said very creepily.

They go away very quickly. The men even quicker than the women.

I would have to say the opposite - and glad that they haven't got the information right - as that would be even more concerning!!

It's sometimes "your recent car accident" that I get. I always reply "I've had two. Which date are you talking about?". They usually ring off then.

I have a database on my phone now and just don't answer unrecognised numbers, then after they have rung off, do the reverse lookup and then add to my blocked callers list - that now boasts about 60 entries. (I should say mobile - we don't get any on the landline as ex directory and signed up with TPS) - bliss.

Just had a second one this time with an Asian voice saying he's from BT security, a similar but not the same number 01724863579 , they must be running a campaign. :) I told him he was a thief and he went very quiet.

A good few years ago, UK Surrey police were warning about requests to call back or dial a suggested number. Doing this would connect you to a top-whack premium-rate line, which would not disconnect when you hung up . Charges incurred could run to hundreds or more at a time.

Gibbo - You do seem to be a prime target!

Maybe it’s time to dump your phone and go back to bean cans & string or smoke signals 😀

That's partly true and partly an urban myth.

The true part is that if they don't hang up when you try to phone back you're already connected to them so they can then lie to you about being whomever they're pretending to be.

The myth is the premium phone charges. You can't be charged if you don't phone a premium number. And they are all in the 084x xxxxxxx, 087x xxxxxxx and anything beginning 09. There are numbers called personal numbers which look a bit like mobile numbers as they begin 07 and you can pay significantly more than a call to a mobile phone would cost. They can be identified as they begin 070 and mobile numbers begin 071 - 079. Some more info here: https://www.area-codes.org.uk/07.php

Pretty rare for my phone to ring at all nowadays Marc, if I've been out for the day I dial 1471 and usually get told "You were called on" and some day a week or more ago.

This was reported on 'You & Yours' regarding how you can be stung for huge bills:
Based on other complaints I've seen, it looks like people are being stung by a "reverse charges scam". On a normal reverse / collect call, the person answering the phone is asked to press a number on their keypad to accept the charges. In this case, customers are played a message like "You've won an iPad! Press 2 to find out more!" they're then played a longer message while the reverse charges rack up.

But that doesn't always work. I have twin BT phones with a centrally placed red button marked 'block'. A while ago I got a nuisance call, put down the phone and pressed the 'calls' button. When the number came up I pressed the 'block' key. Back came the message - "That number is already blocked"... :(

I did mention this was my mobile in my post John :-D

My iphone works great for this and another reason why I NEVER give my landline out to any retail or other organisations - leaving all calls to come through the iPhone.
