Gibbo2286 wrote: 13 Apr 2018, 15:49 You missed out the fact that John Prescott and his bagman Stephen Byers deliberately engineered the downfall of Railtrack Andy, as he promised to do when it was denationalised if he got back into government.

Whilst Prescott may have spoken in favour of, and instituted, a tougher regulatory regime, he did not cause the Southall, Ladbroke Grove, Hatfield and Potters Bar accidents, and he wasn't responsible for the decision by the directors of Railtrack after Hatfield, to order extensive checks as they weren't confident about the state of the rest of the network, or the delay compensation that thus ensued.

And Prescott absolutely certainly was not responsible for the decision by the company to use money it begged from the government to help with its losses to controversially pay shareholders a special dividend.

From https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railtrack

It was the Hatfield crash on 17 October 2000 that proved to be the defining moment in Railtrack's collapse.[12] The subsequent major repairs undertaken across the whole British rail network are estimated to have cost in the order of £580 million. According to Christian Wolmar, author of On the Wrong Line, the Railtrack board panicked in the wake of Hatfield.[13] Because most of the engineering skill of British Rail had been sold off into the maintenance and renewal companies, Railtrack had no idea how many Hatfields were waiting to happen, nor did they have any way of assessing the consequence of the speed restrictions they were ordering – restrictions that brought the railway network to all but a standstill.[14]

Regulatory and customer pressure had been increasing, and the company's share price began to fall sharply as it became apparent that there were serious shortcomings in the company's ability to tackle and solve its greatest problems.[15]

Although it can sound like it, this isn't about the philosophy or politics of private versus public sectors. In the limit it's about having something that pragmatically works, instead of incompetence caused by bad organisation.

On electricity privatisation, the other companies effectively got National Grid for free, then reorganised and floated it off separately. After rail privatisation, it is rumoured the various companies had more contract lawyers than engineers.

Something in that article doesn't ring true. According to the figures below, sales of Diesel cars in March are down 37% compared to a year ago, vs an overall decline in car sales of 15.7%.

I think what's happening is that people are holding on to their old diesel cars instead of buying new ones. I certainly am.

I was never going to buy a new one anyway. :-D Let someone else take that first big chunk of depreciation.

There should be some good discounts available though if there's a glut of unsold stuff hanging around.

The two stories aren't incompatible.

Whilst diesel sales are falling as a share of new sales, they are probably still selling faster than 12 to 15 or 20 years ago, which is probably the rough age of the ones coming out of use.

Well the decline in diesel sales has resulted in this announcement from the Nissan. The Sunderland Echo has its finger on the pulse. Not great news for Washington/Sunderland/ or the UK. Strange, you may have expected the decline of diesel to be offset with the rise of electric particularly at Nissans foremost plant for producing the Leaf and its derivatives.

Apparently its all in line with Nissan Motors UK's 2018 Business plan...a short term reduction in power train supply and plant volumes.

We have not to forget of course the "fantastic economic news" announced not so long ago of new models planned to be built at Sunderland. But that annoncement is by no means cast-iron.
Nissan produces the best-selling Qashqai and Juke, as well, as the Q30 and QX30 for the firm's prestige Infiniti range and the all-electric Leaf. The car giant announced in October 2016 that it was investing in production of new Qashqai and X-Trail models at Sunderland after receiving Government assurances that EU withdrawal would not affect the plant's competitiveness. But chief executive Carlos Ghosn later said the company would 're-evaluate the situation' once the final deal is concluded
Jaguar Land Rover have made similar announcements. The Solihull Observer has its finger on the pulse.

Although this is coming from Bosch, with a VW Golf being tested (and we all know how much we can trust them), there may still be hope for diesel;

Nothing wrong with diesels that an alternative fuel wouldn't solve - &, as they'll run on almost anything, that really shouldn't be a problem.

Read an interesting bit recently about how poor inner city air quality is all to do with politically motivated traffic engineering - & the refusal to tackle the problem of diesel locomotives!

Trouble is, as soon as you start combusting chunks of the atmosphere, you tend to get oxides of nitrogen (air being 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, iirc), so whatever ICE fuel you choose, combustion it is.
Bosch's latest appears to be an attempt to get diesel ICE to run on even more oxygen-depleted stuff, hence the reference to EGR again. OK, up to a point, but hardly locally clean. You can understand them trying to defend their heavily-invested corner though, and that of the car manufacturers.
Cul-de-sac it is, though, I'm afraid.

Noticed the other day that Bosch have come up with a system on a diesel car that will reduce emissions drastically to around 40 mg/km of NOx where the lower limit coming in next year is 120mg/km of NOx (which a lot of the car manufacturers were struggling with to meet) which seems good news if it is not 'fake news', however the system cannot be retrofitted to existing vehicles but at what ongoing cost to the owners of vehicles eventually fitted with this new system, as the existing leading complex systems costs are excessive when the light shows on the dash and they go wrong!

Air is more like 78% nitrogen, 20% oxygen and trace amounts of other gases at less than 1%.

Doesn't SCR completely solve the NOx issue though?

Yes, quite right. My O-level chemistry is a bit distant!
