Sweden is also testing a different type of electric road, using conductive transfer technology based on an energized rail embedded in the road surface. The rail is exposed, and special “shoes” underneath vehicles can draw energy from it continuously. The rail is only energized when a vehicle passes over it, and “multiple safety barriers” are in place to minimize the risk of accidental zaps.

I thought this was quite an interesting episode of fully charged going over the Jaguar i-Pace in detail

I especially liked the cutaway view that shows the layout of the drivetrain and battery, and the "concentric" motor design looks quite interesting from a compactness point of view, with the driveshafts going centrally into the sides of the motor instead of what is usually done in an EV where the gearbox attached to the motor has an offset differential that brings the driveshafts along beside the axis of the motor...(as with a transverse ICE gearbox)

The body and structure is also 94% aluminium alloy using a rivet and glue bonding construction similar to aircraft designs instead of welding.

At a £57,000 starting price with spec options up to £74,000 this is no car for the masses, but for those who buy cars in that price range I think it's the first credible competitor to the Tesla Model X (although it is both smaller and cheaper so not quite in the same size category) and the first all electric BEV from a "mainstream" car manufacturer to have a realistic range of around 240 Miles. (298 on the WLTP)

With first deliveries expected in July they've beaten Porsche, Mercedes, VW and Audi to the punch - all of whom have promised all singing and dancing full electric BEV's but are yet to announce a date that you can order one let alone deliveries.

I wish them well, as it looks like a pretty nice design (again, if you buy SUV's in that price range) and the more good quality, long range BEV's coming from traditional makers the better when it comes to legitimising BEV's in the eyes of the public...

In spite of the SUV revolution, the UK’s best selling car remains the Ford Fiesta.

Now when are Ford going to join in with a more budget end electric “Fiesta” to add to the variety of ev’s available to the mass market.

There was an electric focus I think, but no spots by FCF members so pretty thin on the ground.

Looks like it’s here as a concept :-D

Gibbo had spotted an article on it and gave it an airing here

I like it and welcome the variety in EV offerings.

I would very happily like to see the "affordable" conversion/kit car electric vehicle market take off. The more variety the better. What happened to all the coachbuilders and designers doing their magic on base vehicles.

Take the Leaf. Nissan have created to their credit, an electric vehicle which is pretty much mainstream now, but cloaked it in a marmite body. No one has done anything innovative or stylish with the solid base vehicle...yet. Everything is so integrated now though that any "simple conversions" using a second-hand or written-off Leaf are anything but, and never get finished. Read with interest someone trying to use the Leaf as a base to convert a SAAB Sonnet but never finished off the thread!

With a world full of petrol and diesel vehicles which have already impacted most on the environment simply by having been constructed, we could be waiting a long time for them to be replaced just by banning new sales from 2025/2030 or 2040. Scrapping all those perfectly usable cars, and replacing with new electric would also be a massive waste of resources.

Definitely a role for conversions in the transition...even the 40-mile range morris minor!

Yes, as would I...

I think my Ka would make an excellent base for a budget conversion...
