Big Cats About the House. BBC 2, Thursdays, 20:00.

I am sorry I forgot to post this up last week. Giles Clark (director of The Big Cat Sanctuary) will be looking after two big cat cubs. The first and second (which is on as I am typing) episodes are covering Maya, a black Jaguar cub whose mother abandoned her at 5 days old. Watching her develop is enchanting. When he took her to a hydrotherapy pool (possible developmental issues) she was swimming in very short order, and choosing to go in the water (Jaguars are one of the more enthusiastic aquatic feline hunters).

At the end of episode 2 they 'introduced' Willow, the young cheetah cub. She will be properly introduced in the next episode.

The BBC just showed the Oscar winning short film "The Silent Child". 20 minutes of very clever film work. I would watch it on iPlayer.

The plot is that "Libby" is almost completely deaf (she is about 6 years old). Her parents employ a young lady, "Joanne", who is qualified to tutor children who have hearing difficulties. "Libby" also has an elder brother and sister who have no disabilities. "Joanne" manages to teach "Libby" the basics of sign language, but her parents want her to be able to 'speak normally'. During the private tuition you can see that "Libby" is making progress, and becoming more out-going. However, her parents eventually put her in a primary school that has no support for disabled children, and you can see what is going to happen to her in her future life (they also dismiss "Joanne", as she was not tutoring "Libby" in the way THEY wanted).

Maisie Sly (who played "Libby") is nothing like her character, very outgoing and bubbly (and is also deaf). On "The One Show" Rachel Shenton (who played "Joanne") and Chris Overton (the director) said that when they met Maisie it was obvious within a few minutes they had found "Libby". They specifically wanted (for the film to work) a genuinely deaf child to play "Libby".

Sounds like a good one James... I might try to catch that on iPlayer as I enjoy things like that for perhaps obvious reasons - I think you know me well enough to know what...

It recently won an Oscar (and, so far, eighteen other awards according to IMDB).

Quite enjoying "Cop Car Workshop" on TV at the mo.

Interesting to note that Cheshire force featured felt that the Pug 308 represented the best value 'across the life of the vehicle - 110k in four years apparently, hardly mega-mileage, and bought 62 of them.... the 67 plate that I caught the reg of comes up on DVLA Car Info as a DERV.

...so the Government and its various Departments are really taking this 'Anti-Diesel' thing seriously then :-D

One to tuck away in the "On-TV" marginal interest section

Now to fully enjoy it you may have to have a good working grasp of the French Language, but if you like visuals and old locomotives of the late 1950's you may just extract some enjoyment. Landed on it as a result of posting up a very impressive looking French diesel (no cc 65001) on "OTCL 65000 posts".

This may have wider appeal, its on repeat right now.

Lovely shots of Majorca, and a classic bike hire operator, how to start a BSA Gold Star :-D , and a restoration project on a harley amongst other stuff. Marmite presentation perhaps but I like it, real enthusiast. Have to register of course to view on catch up, but its on regular ITV4 at the moment.

On TV...The Motorbike Show

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Have to big up "The Motorbike Show" again(on right now) if only for the fascinating bit on this week's show of Chrome Plating parts on the Harley restoration. What a place. Tanks filled with all sorts of evil sounding chemicals including hydrochloric acid and cyanide, but the end product is just superb. Certainly wouldn't fancy being a day after day chromium plater in that sort of environment!

Nothing to do with cars (yet), but you must watch the new BBC2 series Cunk on Britain. First 30min episode of the 5-part series was last night (Tuesday) at 10pm.

Had me open-mouthed and in stitches, especially as the naive Philomena Cunk interviews (equally disbelieving) experts. "1066 and All That" for the tv age!

Worth a peek.

Orford Ness and Cobra Mist feature on Michael Portillo's hour long documentary about 'Hidden Histories' tomorrow night 9.00pm Channel 5. Last week it was all about the history of the now abandoned Royal London hospital and was surprisingly interesting, although I can well imagine that many will see Orford Ness as being nothing but a load of old concrete

"Orford Ness: Defence of the Realm. On the Suffolk coast lie some of Britain's most mysterious ruins - concrete bunkers, rusting radar towers and crumpled military hardware. For almost a century, Orford Ness was owned by the Ministry of Defence, and when it closed in 1993, its buildings were still shrouded in secrecy. Michael Portillo explores a 90,000 sq ft windowless box code-named Cobra Mist, a joint UK-US venture built in 1968 that purportedly housed a huge aerial array to spy on Russian missile launches. He also examines Orford's apparent role as a testing centre for atomic weapons, including the first British atom bomb"
Channel 5 9.00pm Friday 27/04/18

something I've found really funny recently, "Mum"; unsure about its availability now, but its brilliant ! Nothing expensive or fancy about it, just an old-fashioned comedy about everyday life: brilliantly observed, beautifully written and well acted; with probably not much of a budget.
