Just shows how bloody bizarre computer systems are

I find it amazing anything remotely alive could live happily in diesel (or at the diesel/water interface) but there you go... Seems life can live just about anywhere given half a chance...

When I was at Uni, I grew some bacteria that lived in acid media - we started at pH1, and they produced acid species as they grew, so the pH went down - ended up being -1 or some such. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans... I shall never forget that. If you're really bored, I wrote a paper on it.... Complex stuff from a past life!

Agree there's not much chance of getting shot of diesel bug with a dose of unleaded, it's even been found in 2-stroke premix tanks living off the oily goodness in there. (and in that case did a number on the fuel pump & carb, their acidic excreta had eaten away the alloy to a sludge).

I fear White may have an infestation, although to a lesser degree & I cleaned the sender/pickup a few months back, but will check again soon. I think the best solution is probably to use the car more often, heating up the fuel in the tank via return flow & making it uncomfortably hot for the little blighters!

I wonder if meths would work?
I used to add it to the Imp tank, which was prone to condensation. Not a clue on how it would work with diesel but should mix with the water and remove it and should also kill bacteria.

That's an interesting idea, could be worth a try although the ethanol in modern fuels would surely have done the same thing if it were effective? Maybe a higher concentration of meths would work.

Is ethanol added to diesel though - I was under the impression it was only added to petrol in the UK.

Not as far as I know... I believe all diesel now has a certain percentage of bio in it though... I wonder if that encourages the wildlife to grow?

Ah of course, not sure if diesel has ethanol after all. But then again if it doesn't (and seeing what the stuff does to hoses/seals etc on petrol vehicles) would you really want to put it though the diesel fuel system?

The bio being a factor in it's growth could well be on the right track, I mean it's not exactly been commonplace in the past for cars to suffer (more of a marine/boat problem from what I'd read on it). I thought it was just unlucky that White had some gunge but if a few cars start turning up with the stuff maybe it is on the increase now...

It is the bio element that carries more bacteria.

I am going to Marine 16 a go to eradicate the cATP's.

Not sure if anyone has answered this but can the filter in the tank be changed without changing the whole pump?

It does not need to be replaced Roger, it can be cleaned...
