I came close to saying something like that the other evening. Things seem to have become much worse in the last 5 or 6 years, and it's possible to find discussions that shortfalls used to be 5% years ago, then gradually 20%, and the worst examples now are over 30% down, touching 40%

In a way this is still understated and things are even worse. If a car claims 60 mpg and achieves 37.5 mpg, this is described as only 62.5% of what it should be, 37.5% down. But actually it means the car will spend 60% more on fuel than the driver hoped (think about how much to go 300 miles, 8 gallons versus 5 gallons). The continental system of figures, fuel per distance, rather than our reciprocal distance by fuel, is actually a bit more sensible. Even the country's moneysavingexpert would wrongly say 60 mpg is 20% better than 50 mpg. No, the cost ratio shows it's 16.66%

I occasionally look on a site called spritmonitor, German but with English language available, where people enter their own real world figures. I hadn't checked before, but it turns out to have electric cars as well. A car which claims 93 miles range has about 60 or 65 miles on average.

That sounds exactly like the Ion/C-Zero....

The NEDC figure for the Ion was 93 miles of range - which is a fantasy and simply not possible. 60-65 miles in summer without the heater doing "combined" city/highway driving is a realistic average figure which I actually achieve.

It does depend a lot on speed, heater use and outside temperature though. If you stack everything in your favour - summer temperatures, dry roads, no heater use, and not going above 30mph my Ion would easily do 75 miles and might even push to 80 miles. (Not 93 though) And on the motorway at 60mph, about 60 miles.

Stack everything against it - winter temperatures, wet roads, heater on full, 70mph on the motorway you'll get more like 35 miles! That goes to show how much heater use and speed affects energy consumption and thus range...

My daily commute is 38 miles, about half is 30mph urban driving, the rest is motorway, although speeds vary anywhere from 50-70mph on the motorway with some 10mph crawl in the morning as well. In summer I get home with as much as 25 miles range left, so 63 miles total range in my "combined" commute driving cycle, in winter with the heater turned right up I'd typically get home with only 5 miles range left - so about 43 miles total range!

So trying to specify a single realistic range figure for an EV when the range is so greatly affected by heater use and speed is challenging. But the wrong solution is to give a figure so high that it can't be achieved under any conditions...

I have now. Just the sort of variety of offer needed in the emerging ev market whether you like it or not. Being more on classic lines I do like it.

Because if I had a medical emergency, I'd want a cramped, bumpy, windy, and wet ride to A&E.

(the doors and windows are both optional extras, and even if you have the windows rain leaks inside like a sieve as they are just perspex held closed by velcro with gaps you can put a hand through  )

Last time I was rushed to A&E in an ambulance I seem to remember the ride was exactly that

It was bloody dreadful and that was in a normal, conventional emergency ambulance about six years ago...

Keep seeing the odd Leaf and Zoe but not much else although I don't really pay much attention to what other cars are most of the time.

This bloke was spotted and wishes he hadn't been.

Whining like a victim, he was "unlucky", like he's pretending there could be plenty of people might be doing this.

There should be more offences for which the vehicle can legally be seized and destroyed or resold, irrespective of its value, that and fly tipping and some others.

2 months into 18 plates and I've still to knowingly see an electric one. Need to mug up on what the new Leaf looks like, as that has to be the most likely.

The thing that's especially annoying is there are multiple safety systems that he had to defeat to do it. For example if you unbuckle the seatbelt - which you would need to do to climb into the passenger side, it immediately disables autopilot.

So he must have either unbuckled the seatbelt and then buckled it up again underneath himself, so that he could swap seats without unbuckling, or started driving the car in the first place sitting on top of a buckled up seat belt. Both imply premeditation that he was going to do this stupid thing and that it wasn't an on the spur of the moment thing... idiot.
