The Pickled Egg JukeBox

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Well I'll park my career as a comedian for now, and go back to DJ'ing and turn my attention to the PE Jukebox.

Remember its a receptacle for good stuff you come across, or want to inflict educate the rest of the FCF with.

Today on R2, in the oldies section from 3.00 ish chosen by a member of the general public, up came George Michael doing "I can't make you love me". It is a fantastic very emotional song and George does an absolutely superb version of it.

The version posted up by Bobins here by Bonnie Raitt with Bruce Hornsby on piano is also superb. The song was "given" to Bonnie Raitt by the Nashville songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin.

So here is George for today but check back to the "original" by Bonnie Raitt. Deservedly ranked one of the best songs ever written in my opinion.

I am sure the Kate Rusby version of "Village Green Preservation Society" was on Jeremy Vine the other day and I have given that an airing on the Self Drive Cars thread.

Autoplayed on to this, and I have a feeling I could get to quite like Kate's stuff. Folk hasn't made much of an appearance on the PE Jukebox yet.

Give Kate a try...

Aha, folk, much more my sort of thing :) Kate Rusby; might I add Cara Dillon, Heidi Talbot as being in much the same 'genre' and of similar quality.

My track for the Pickled Egg must be this one "Right Time"; its beautifully produced. Sadly, their style changed for the worse later on in their career with Andrea Corr's rather mediocre vocals playing too large a part (I always felt Caroline was the better vocalist) and the superb harmonies and backing of their first album under-utilised. However their first album "Forgiven not Forgotten" (1995) is very good.

No sooner than I mention Kate Rusby for the first ever time within the walls of The Pickled Egg, and there she is emblazoned across a Poster at the Gala Theatre at Durham. :-D

Quite remarkable as David Coleman might have exclaimed :-D

Durham, one of those places I've been meaning to get to for quite a while; but it'll not be anytime soon, even with Kate Rusby at the Gala Theatre.

...but at least I can listen to her on the Car Stereo (there's an image, lol!); having swapped my new-ish cheap stereo for daughter's old Kenwood I've 'lost' the 'blown speakers' effect I was getting with the other one; weird (not overly fussed).

Thanks for the Youtube edit myglaren :)

that's an unusual version of Higher Love, with Steve & Lilly Winwood, his "While You See A Chance" is among my all-time favourites; but the one album of his I owned, Chronicles; I didn't really 'get on' with, and its long gone.

I've just put my 5 Disc Changer (Sony CDP-500M) atop the Midi, in place of the single CDP-M26 to use my CD's more; in the past couple of weeks. ....not that they amount to much, I keep 'clearing em out'!

Another one from me..... Celtic Woman performing Amazing Grace (appropriate on Easter Sunday maybe.... though I'm not a frequent church attendee) they're a bit similar to Andre Rieu. Really decent Percussion, Voices, Costumes and even Bagpipes. ....they're damn pretty too!

...wistful for Scotland again, and no plans this year :( Will be the first time in ten years that we've not got there two years running if I don't fix it.

Celtic Woman is/was a superb gathering of excellent singers.

Many find this by Lisa Kelly to be unbeatable.

There is one who can surpass this though, no prizes for guessing who. (not Hayley Westenra, although she too is superb).
