What do you know about bots?

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

..before I consign them to room 101!

Here's the registered users playing at this point in time on our very forum

Ahrefs [Bot], andy5, Bing [Bot], Google [Bot], Linkdex [Bot], marc61, milleplod, NewcastleFalcon, SEOkicks [Bot]

Now I landed on Radio 4 this lunchtime, the programme "You and Yours" to be precise, and Bots came into the discussion. The context was a fashion industry marketing ploy known as a Fashion Drop employed by many of the leading brands to create a "hype" for their goods.

Some make a business of buying items from the fashion drop for which a "hype" has been generated by the brand and reselling at a higher price. They do this by means of bots which "jump the queue" by getting in within a millisecond of the Brand doing the drop, and buying the items. Your average member of the public doesn't stand a chance against the professional Bot!

A 'bot, short for robot obviously, is a wide-ranging term used to describe computer programs or "scripts" that run within a program, usually to perform repetitive tasks.
As such, their range of use is pretty open ended.

Assuming that people want to use search engines to help random access to website content on subjects they look up, the providers need to have these crawler bots searching and creating indexes of what is on each page of each site, coming back for updates to new versions from time to time.

Pretty soon, if you do a search for frenchcarforum, bots, and your username, this page will probably be the top result

Bots and crawlers, as identified by the forum, are a special class of user who do not need to log-in to the forum to get access to the members area of the forum, they identify themselves using a special user agent string.

We also help them by proving a simple index of all of the accessible content on the forum, which can be seen here:
