wierdest filer material used?
Been out and checked the fluid levels yesterday morning on the old Xsara. Every thing great [:D]. Thought I'd check the air filter housing as it sometimes gets oil vapour trapped in it's internal filter that leads off the rocker cover. To my horror I on removal of the lid from the housing.... the filter was missing [:0]. Now I remember cleaning it last November but have forgotten to put it back, DOH!. Any how went to main Citroen dealer parts dept and well you've guessed it, it aint listed as a seperate part it's the whole thing or nothing, £33 plus the vat [:0]. Hmmm I only need an oil vapour catching filter and where can I get one from [?] Halfrauds don't do them but hey Sainsburys do [^]. Cunning stuf was desguised as..... stainless steel pan scourer (no soap type) fitted and works a treat even better than the original Citroen mesh set up. Car runs fine and all is well. Still can't find the original in the garage but hey I'm now filtering with pan scourers. [:D]

Ah yes, our Mr Citroen has developed some cunning ideas to see our money and ourselves going in opposite directions.
The airfilter element on a BX16Trs was a classic example; they fed a breather line smack in the centre (outside) of the element. The acids in the oil simply ate a hole straight through it within about 2000 klms; new one I was quoted A$36. Makes oil changes a bit expensive.
The CX also had a crafty one on some 2400 models. The outer stainless plates appeared to have this similar "pot scourer" materials internally and were an oil bath type of filter. However, how many CX owners do you hear complaining about lousy fuel consumption? Nearly all; reason was that in the centre of this "cartridge" they had a sheet of foam which with age simply went to goo and totally sealed the majority of the surface area of the filter up. To rectify, you had to drill the spot welds, prise it apart and wash the old gunk out. Some were then rewelded although common trick was to pop rivet for convenience sake.As I say, he clever man at pulling little tricks on us this Mr Citroen.
