I didn't know termites produced methane.

It's a shame cars can't run on methane (although not harvested from trmites - AND no jokes about bee pee!) - but I'm not sure about emissions from a fuel which is one to start with. Of course, perversely, that is part of the attraction.

I recall reading about this some years ago when cow farts were blamed but it was then discovered that it is actually cow belches that emit the Methane.

I think - without checking - that it is the consumption of wood by termites that releases the Methane, much as the Swedes produce it and Methanol to run engines on (they have a lot of wood*)

*where I lived there was a railway track a short distance away. On Tuesday nights (02:00) the Volvo train would pass by, took it around twenty minutes to pass, on it's way to Stockholm.

On Thursday nights, at around the same time, the wood train would pass on it's way to Malmö that took well over an hour to pass by - slowly but hundreds of cars each with around 100 tons of tree trunks on them - the block of flats was built on marshy ground and would sway when the trains passed by to the extent that a brim-filled glass would spill. Kept us amused anyway :)

Indeed so about the cows - it was on Countryfile a week or so ago. They belch most of the methane (the cows, not the Countryfile presenters), and scientists are trying to find ways of altering their diets (the cows, not the scientists) to reduce the amount of methane production.

Send them (the cows) to McDonalds. That should fix them.

Umm, were cows not happily belching methane before humans even started herding them ? Why the sudden push to reduce methane produced by cows when we should be reducing the methane produced by industrial processes and leaving the cows alone ?

I think, back in those days Simon, cow numbers were a very, very tiny fraction of what they are today and therefore their emissions were not an issue...

Cows and the like are a very inefficient ways of producing food for humans.. If the land they graze was used to grow plant-based food instead it would be much, much more efficient...

A good start to reducing bovine methane emissions would be to cut meat production and encourage people to eat far more plant-derived food...

It is not necessary to eat meat every day or even every week - as us who are largely vegetarians can attest :)

After all, it used to be a luxury and reserved for special occasions only...

Keep your hands off my steak Jim, I don't really fancy pretend meat made in a plastics factory. :-D

Look up the "Impossible Burger", you might find it interesting. It's something being developed by a company called impossible foods - it is basically a "beef" patty that is entirely artificially manufactured using plant based proteins, complete with the texture of real meat. No animals killed to make it, and presumably more efficient than using animals since you're directly taking plant proteins and recombining them to produce the product with no in between step.

It's not just lab work - while they're still working on improving it you can actually buy them to eat in some places like California - reviews so far are that they don't taste quite the same as real meat but are pretty close and still taste quite nice in their own right.

Certainly an interesting development for someone like me who suffers from the cognitive dissonance that I like meat to eat and am definitely a meat eater, but I don't like what goes on behind the scenes to get that meat into the supermarket! Being able to manufacture something like this more efficiently and without the use of animals would seem to be a godsend to those of us who can't kick the meat habit...

If everyone followed the plant protein route and gave up meat how long would it be before the lowly cow became and endangered species confined to zoos and reservations?
