I remember when the Porsche Cayenne and the Toerag first made their appearances, and we thought them appallingly large. These days, they're nothing remarkable . . . except usually found parked straddling two parking spaces.
For sheer bulky and unattractive ugliness, the rear end of a BMW X6 scores pretty high.
Reminds me of the rather old "What's the difference between a Range Rover and a hedgehog...?"
An XC90'S not particularly big (says he with 2 Jeep Cherokees) - well not compared with a Nissan Patrol & THEY were popular on the school run in their day.
I always think that these large vehicles (based on making a large van handle similar to a car) are probably all about p---s envy. Used to be based on long bonnets in my youth - I can just about remember (my youth).
Reducing the tax on large gas guzzlers is completely baffling to me. I thought it was about trying to limit the number of these vehicles on our roads due to their unsuitability. Seeing them trying - usually unsuccessfully - to navigate Cornwalls narrow lanes, relying on their proximity warnings, as the majority have absolutely no idea of the size of their vehicles. Pitiful really - and one has to ask, if they don't know, should they actually be driving said vehicle. Rather like the young beema drivers we see slowly and carefully navigating our local A roads, only to get on the motorwar and instantly blast up to 80. If they cannot navigate an A road at between 30 and 40, they are a distinct hazard at 80 - the carriageways are the same width here. I despair.
They assemble in herds around here, and enjoy the company of ubiquitous farmery-type's pick-ups.
A pickup isn't an SUV is it? Its a proper working vehicle that you can carry a bale of hay, a couple of border collies or a pile of logs in the pick-up bit, while enjoying all the SUV type comforts in the double cab. No one would have any need for a pick-up truck in the cities surely?
Yup, in my quiet suburban street, the Rangies, Shoguns & BMW/MB breadvan thingies are giving way to (mainly) German & Japanese pick-ups.
Farmers tend to favour Great Walls (price is a major factor) - a truck that will absolutely never become a fashion accessory ( . . . but then a few years ago that would've been the view about Defenders!)
That ad very careful not to show too much of the car - just in case anyone twigs how unremarkable it could be.
The Advert tells you nothing, and has a meaningless tag line, think the message is passing me by.
That advert is getting constantly played this weekend. Just been wasting time watching "The Sweeney" and "Minder" and it must have been on 3 or 4 times!
Lovely little car chase in The Sweeney. the Granada versus a "White Foreign-looking R-Reg" (Reagan's words not mine!).
Yes turned out to be a Renault 16!

Reagan was right
In those days they were Foreign!
I remember the Car Mechanics magazine of the early 70s... In their help pages all the queries and questions were arranged under headings by British makes... Austin, Ford, Hillman, Morris, Riley and so on...
All non-British makes were lumped under the heading of 'Foreign'...
At least it narrowed it down a bit the R16 did look a bit different! After grey or silver the 2018 eye witness would be hard pushed to come up with any distinguishing features!
