206 1.4 diesel, what's it like?

Unread post by Peter.N. »

I have been looking out for a 2.0. Hdi 206 estate as my wife wants a smaller car, I had decided on the 2.0. engine as its a known quantity but there is a 1.4 about fairly locally and wondered if anyone had experience of them.

All comments gratefully received.

We've got one, it's been a good little car all in all. Owned since mid 2015, only engine related issue was a limp home once which was due to a sticky EGR.

There are known to be leaky injector seals and glow plugs that snap off if one tries to renew them but I think that can affect any HDi and it hasn't happened to ours.

They're a pretty nippy little motor once on boost (from about 2000rpm), below that they lack the torque of the larger engine but it's really an adjustment in driving style IMO rather than an inherent problem, they just like to be revved a bit more than the 2.0 and still get decent economy with it. First gear is rather short but other than that it's a great little motor.

If you do decide to go for it, just make sure it has a good service history with decent oil being used & that there's no tar round the injectors or antipollution faults popping up.

Thanks for that. Does it share any of the problems of the 1.6hdi i.e turbo failure? I believe its an 8 valve engine is it based on the 2.0. or 1.6?

Thanks

No reputation for turbo failure or anything like that AFAIK, it is 8 valve at least on ours, (2002 model, non-dpf which I consider a bonus as well as the £30 tax) not sure if there was ever a 16v version.

I'm unsure which engine it was based on if any, although they're fitted to Fiestas etc of the same era badged as 1.4TDCi and I believe are the preferred diesel engine in those. Also Mazdas I think, possibly even Toyota.

My daughter had a C3 1.4 HDi which I suspect had the same engine and she was very pleased with it after the initial hiccup of the dealer filling the tank with petrol.
Very cheap to run and proved to be completely reliable, they did lots of miles in it until her then husband decided they would have a Volvo - that someone totalled a month later :(

She is on her third C3 now and is quite happy with them.
Dumped the husband though.
