C4 radio options.

Post by waynedance »

Thinking of getting a C4 for the misses around a 2007 model.

Will be looking a VTR, VTR+ or Cool model (rear elec windows wanted). What does the factory radio do? Play mp3 etc.

Is it easy to fit an aftermarket stereo if no mp3?

Thanks.

Without knowing what unit is fitted (there were several options) it will be hard to say. Standard unit is RD4, but again will depend on year and options. Aftermarket is of course doable, but at the expense of vehicle configuration options as that is done via the head unit.

The posher models have controls for functions on the steering wheel (fixed) boss allowing you to set time etc with an aftermarket head unit although the parking sensor often won't work properly even with a patch lead fitted. The standard RD4 plays MP3 from a disc. Citroen marketed a USB Box to replace CD changer that lets you play ipod/usb/aux in. To do this CD changer has to be enabled. I have RD4 with USB Box in my VTS, also has the JBL premium sound option with a Sub woofer in the boot and an amp under the driver seat. Sounds pretty good to me!

Main thing would be able to play mp3, usb sounds a good option.
So the standard spec radio plays mp3 discs, not all bad then.

I believe some of the early ones 2004/5 didn't. Some of the units have MP3 printed on the front and others only have it typed on the build sticker at the back. Personally I found it a pretty useless feature as it was not possible to play random on several folders on the disc (so only played random on one album as that was how they usually were on the disc) You could overcome it by putting all tracks onto a disc not in album folders but never bothered.

Not sure, I think you have to press 1 for menu and press 2 for track & artist titles. It doesn't scroll this information continuously like the CD player does (but neither does a CD changer or the USB Box).
I nearly always have the USB Box with an ipod in the glove compartment playing.

You can just buy a £6 cable off Amazon and connect it to the back of the RD3/4. You then activate the aux ports with Lexia and hey presto, you have an aux-in cable for your RD3.. route it out through the ashtray below.

If you have the RD4 you can fit the RD45 which has built in support for USB and Bluetooth audio streaming.

I got one from eBay but had to also change the screen as the RD45 only works with newer multifunction screens.

This all looks like a lot of bother, would have to be really easy to use for the misses to use.

Display song playing, continue playing when switching ignition back on, easy to navigate tracks and folders on the go.

The RD45 is a drop in replacement for the original radio. It uses the same buttons and steering wheel controls.

I've got a thread on replacing the RD4 with a RD45 in the telematics section.

Had a quick look on your write up, still seems a lot of work changing displays etc.

Shlame as the C4 is a lot of car for little money. Will look into it more later, seen a few C4s for sale local.

Just fit the aux cable and have it plug into her phone. I did this recently on my C4 Grand Picasso and Peugeot 207. 10 mins of a job if you have access to a Lexia. If you're anywhere near Reading I'll do it for you if you get the cable and I can get hold of a Lexia for a couple of hours.

Would be interested to see this... Had a look and can't find the thread though?
Could you post a link please?

Note: Topic moved to the Audio / Telematics section.

It's a few pages as the topic was a bit of a mixed bag - but here you go:
