75 mpg for the 1.5D is just someone exaggerating I think.

Buy them both and keep the one that gives the best results. :)

If they are both good, then the petrol as scrap yards will have more parts etc. No small car should have an oil-fueled engine because you cannot rev the nuts off them !

How about a 206 2.0 hdi, all the performance you need and a bombproof engine.

I have owned both, and would have the 205 1.1 petrol over the 106 1.5 diesel. In the real world you will get about 55mpg out of the 1.5 diesel and 45 out of the 1.1 petrol, and taking into account that diesel is more expensive than petrol there won't be much difference in fuel cost. The 205 is a nicer, conifer car to drive and be in, and the values of them are rising for well kept ones. Watch for rust, the common areas on the 205 are the boot floor, right along the rear of the car, and the front edge of the inner wings, under the headlights. If it is sound in those two areas then the chances are it is sound all over. My 1993 one has no rust anywhere. Parts availability should be ok for both, as the 106 is essentially the same car as the Saxon and there are lots about in scrappies and there's a thriving 205 owners club to source parts from. Good luck and I hope whatever one you get, and the 106d is not a bad car, that it is good for your son.

You can buy so much more modern, safer small cars for that kind of money. Ones that aren't going to crumple when he inevitably bumps It, ones that work and you don't have to root around scrapyards for parts for.. loads of them on AutoTrader for less than that money.

I agree Peter. This is the best sort of choice. Modern and safe too! Not made out of tinfoil like a Saxo!

Expensive to insure for a young driver - I would think.

I've got a Saxo 1.5D which I've had from when it was 6months old. I bought it for my wife but she didn't use it much. Now I use it for local running. My grandson is almost ready to take his driving test and I suppose he'll have it one day. For a 20 year old car it's in great condition with about 43k on the clock............... some one was pulling your leg when they said 75mpg. Maybe 55 on a good run - but not too fast.. :-D

Probably as cheap as a Saxo or 106. It's a safer car, it's not seen as a popular kids car, it's not going desirable status . Insurance isn't purely on age. This is why a Xantia costs way more for me to insure than.. a Focus ST with 3 times the power.

Daugther's 106D used to average mid to high 60's mpg, in normal use; they are fabulously frugal bits of kit. I've no trouble believing 75mpg is achievable on a run, but an average figure in the region of 60mpg should be realistic.

Don't forget to check the MOT History for each before you commit. Check also that neither of them has Head Gasket or Rear Axle issues, which are the most 'common' major issues with these.

We had a 2005 Nissan Micra for 5 years for wife's commuting, shopping etc.; that and occasional trips to Dunfermline (son) and Liskeard (two sons) it averaged 73 mpg over 60,000 plus miles and was driven as normal, not hanging about but not as a girl racer!
A friends wife had a petrol version and that averaged just over 51 mpg overall.
I checked out the readout over 3 tanks of fuel as it looked suspiciously high, but found itt very accurate indeed. A fabulous little car with the most interior storage space of any vehicle I've been in - boot accepted of course. PSA take note, our DS3 and current C4 Picasso were/are abysmal. Very useful decent size storage bin under the passenger seat for handbags - a girls essential. LOL. ( more than twice the size of the Picasso's). I was sad to see the Nissan go; would thoroughly recommend with no hesitation, subject to service history, but apart from an initial problem with the auto boot locking (swiftly correcten under warranty) was completely trouble-free, as was the hands free keyless entry.

I would like to buy a new car, and I am in love with the french cars. I had a Peugeot 306 but I sold it last year and now I am looking for a new one. I am thinking about a new Peugeot 3008 or an e-2008 full electric car. Honestly, I found both of them, and I found them in a very good condition and color and I would like to buy both of them, but I don't have enough money, more than that, I will have to pay for the shipment as both of the cars are situated on the other side of the country and it will take me a lot of time to drive them by myself. So to say, I was lucky enough to find this great shipping service [link deleted] I will be able to ship a car and to track it via a GPS tracker, and the price for the shipment is really good, nearly 1000$ for a 10 day shipment from the other side of the country, brilliant.
