glow plugs

Hi guys, I have put the car in as the car is not auto regening.
they plugged it in and Engine ECU BOSCH EDC16C34

They identified that the Glow Plugs have failed but two of them have snapped they say they need to remove the head to sort it out and that's an 11hour job??????
for now they have put it all back together as I cannot afford the bill untill the end of the month, but I am concerned that the broken pieces will drop into the engine as I am driving until the work is done. should I be worried about this or not??

is 11hours the right amount of time to do this job?

I suspect they are allowing PLENTY of time to do the job - just in case of difficulties. Just seen this though....



I've sent you an email John in response - maybe 'Lighty' can throw some light on the prognosis?

am I right marc is assuming they will need to remove and possible replace
head bolts
head gasket
oil + filter
coolant

might aswell change the timing belt too as I cannot guarantee it was done at 120k???????

somebody said it might have a chain??? they can be reused or am I wrong?

John, there are no such thing as stupid questions (or, for that matter, too many questions), but stupid, avoidable mistakes do exist. The reason to ask a question is to get information you either do not have, or you want to make sure your knowledge is correct.

John, the title of my thread here well describes what happened with snapped glow plugs for me....

I ran the Picasso for about 5,000 miles with the snapped glow plug tips in situ, but the tip eventually fell into the cylinder wreaked its havoc and effectively scrapped the car.

I didn't find any specialist to remove the tips in situ, but no doubt there are people out there who can do it. There are tools you can purchase I think for a DIY job, and I have come across you tube vids of the process. If I recall right there was a very good thread on this done by one of the members. I'll try and find it for you.

Yes, they'll need to take off the following when removing the Cylinder Head - and they will also need to drain and refill the cooling system:

• The engine cover
  The air filter housing
  The fuel filter
  The exhaust gas recycling module
  The inlet air metering unit
  The air inlet pipe
  The fuel filter support
  The glow plugs
  The fuel injectors
  The timing belt
  The catalytic converter and particle filter assembly
  The turbocharger
  The exhaust manifold
  The alternator and its support (On the left-hand side)
  The camshaft housing
  The thermostat

The above is what is officially recorded as procedure. Probably a good idea to get the belt done (and possibly the tensioners and water pump) at the same time if you are going to get the other job done.

The glow plugs don't stop the DPF regenning on these - both ours have been reporting glowplug faults for a long time withouth DPF troubles. I would go looking somewhere else. Taking the head off is a PITA as you need to remove the injectors, chances are that will wreck some of them.

I tend to renew glow plugs about 4 yrs. On hdi they are not strictly needed on starting. They do work on post heat for clean running though. The worst thing about leaving them in for these long periods, is then getting them out in one piece. If replaced regular and some anti seize used, it is only to the good and £30 well spent.

UPDATE on glow plugs, 2 of the 4 had snapped, the garage took 8 days, the man said it was so gunked up he could scoop out the mess with his finger????? not sure if this is true as I have always done the oil change and filter and the oil says its ok when I start the car.
