Re: Tartan Travel Rugs and other Nostalgic Motoring Accessories
The Hunter did ..... the horrid (HORRID, went after 3 weeks, door pillar moved when you tugged the seat belt) beetle that I bought cheaply and in a hurry so I could get to work when the Hunter spectacularly gave up the ghost (piston ring/piston top at 167k miles and covered the M63 in a pall of oil smoke) didn't. Nor did the rather nice K plate Maxi that followed. I guess they disappeared in the early 70s.

Like the Hunter, and its wing mirrors. Knew the "OD" was a Devon registration without looking it up from holidays down in Devon looks well worth an airing on "Classics What Have you Spotted" if you have more pics!
That looks like a yellow Renault 4 in the background of the beetle without wing mirrors. Some of the R4 pics I have come across only have one!

Re: Tartan Travel Rugs and other Nostalgic Motoring Accessories
If you look back to my pictures of steering wheels from a few days ago, you can just see the top of JOD number plate hung from a nail on the wall. That's all that's left I'm afraid, never did the rebuild, at 167k miles other bits were too far gone and I had no garage. It was my father's car, he got a company car so it became mine with about 30k on the clock. Had it a long long time and ended up living in Stockport area. Sold it for one whole pound to someone at work who wanted the alternator and had a rope to drag it away. Still have the pound note. First car, first head gasket change, first stromberg carburetor rebuild, first window-misting devon-lane back seat grope, first driving trip to Europe, first (and only) motoring fine, first commute to work car, first (and only) wedding ......

Re: Tartan Travel Rugs and other Nostalgic Motoring Accessories
As I posted up the other day, the only thing remaining from my first car is the chrome petrol cap, but I did virtually every job on that car, engine out, subframe, hydrolastic pipes, clutch, steering rack, making brake pipes, ball joints, (wish I still had the old ball-joint splitter would have worked well prising windscreen wipers off which I need to do now!).
I also learned to drive on that car, purposely heading for the local country roads in snow and having a bit of fun and learning stuff you just dont get at your normal driving school.
Regards Neil

One of the 'Plusnet' adverts (the one that uses Kiplings' poem "If") has, at one point, a Renault R4 in it.

Ahh, I use Plusnet here, touch-wood it's been just like an R4 - basic but excellent and perfectly reliable

The car sticker
This one reads "Ford We brought it back from Mexico!" and is attached to an Escort Mexico.
and if you have a Jaguar roadster, and the weather is a bit sunshine and showers you need one of these little raincoats for your car

The vintage Bedford mobile cinema had chrome wing mirrors made by Raydyot
In 1964 you could get these Continental Mirrors from Raydyot for your motorcycle or scooter as graces guide records..

T'other popular mirror brand was Desmo.
Radyot did a roaring trade in auxiliary spot and foglights. Remember Rolls-Royce actually using front fogs as indicators!

Re: Tartan Travel Rugs and other Nostalgic Motoring Accessories
I was clearing out an old shed today and came across something that brought back memories.... mainly of pain
One of these:
but, perhaps more memorably, how many people can remember removing important parts of fingernails trying to undo the damned awkward battery compartment lock on the bottom ?

Whatever happened to batteries with lethal metal prongs which very probably fitted into old cycle lamps. One long prong one shorter prong.
Find me a picture someone...have drawn a blank so far...

At first sight I thought it was a carbide lamp.
