Motor Control

Post by renagade »

Hi Guy's sorry this is not a Citroen question but I want to make an electric motor run for five mins. after the power has been switched off. I think this is poss. if I put a capacitor in the feed line to the motor. What do you guy's think????

You need a timer relay, you can get them for mains use but don't know about about 12 volts, have a look on ebay. A capacitor would work if you had one big enough, several farads would required and you probably don't have room for it. You could make up a circuit using a smaller capacitor and a high resistance relay.

Most bathroom extractor fans have a run-on facility, often adjustable duration. I wonder if you could find any circuit diagrams for clues? Vent Axia and Xpelair are the common brands.

Just to clarify, there are a number of ways if doing this, but none will work with the power removed entirely - you will still need a supply for the run-on function. A capacitor won't store enough charge to keep the motor running (well, no practical capacitor and motor, anyway).

A cheap source of a relay may be a heated rear window timer relay, although you may need to adjust a component value to get the exact timing that you require.

Velleman do several small pcb kits that will do this. Google Velleman kits.
You don't say what voltage/power your motor is.

An Arduino with appropriate shield would also work but may be a bit too much to bother with.

If you don't mind me asking, WHY do you want this motor to run on for 5 minutes (and what loads will the motor be under)? Without knowing voltages/amperages any guesses will be just that; guesses.

Sounds like a turbo timer type of device.

Suppose you could always use a BIG GINORMOUS HUGE flywheel so it keeps spinning for a very long time, would take an age to get up to speed though. Or pump water/lift a weight as energy storage devices. Or engage the services of a hamster. (all the best ideas come after a bottle of good wine).

If its a serous project and you want to spend a few ££, maybe a raspberry pi as a controller - you could make it do many other things as well. A search for "raspberry pi motor control" will bring you all you would ever want to know and maybe more ...... that's all about control, so you will still need a live power source.

We still haven't a clue exactly what the application/installation actually is! #-o
Without that info, all this is just ******* in the wind.
