Re: P.E.Jukebox-Day 13 Advent Calendar!
Day 13
Whats been on today..........Bob Dylan's Christmas offering which you either or love or think "what on earth was he doing" so I'll pass on that one. Then the ever so familiar now "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues and Kirsty McCall.
Few memorable lines from that of course but everyone knows "The Boys of the NYPD Choir were singing Galway Bay" So that's where my selections for Day 13 spring from.
First up. The oldest "Galway Bay" song was composed in London by Frank A. Fahy (1854–1935), a native of Kinvara (Co. Galway) on the shores of Galway Bay. It was originally written to air of "Skibbereen"
So what does "Skibbereen" sound like?.......Very dark and emotional, and Sinead O'Connor performs it with a beautiful grittyness.
Then we move onto Delores Keane with Fahy's song to a different melody, much softer than the melody of Skibbereen.
and finally we get to the more saccharine sound of a different song Galway Bay made famous mostly by Bing Crosby, and which appears to be the "Galway Bay" fictionally sung by the fictional NYPD Choir
In order of preference I go 1,2 with 3 a distant 3rd
Regards Neil

Day 16
Lets see what the Guitar Heroes have made of winter/christmas tunes.
Whell who knew? Robin Trower has actually recorded "O Little Town Of Bethlehem". Being a fan I will listen to anything he churns out
Regards Neil

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox.
Day 18.....dig up something interesting.
Once you start looking away from popular "shop music", it is not really that surprising that musicians and singers have always come up with songs for this season, they just dont get the airplay.
Blues artist are a particularly rich furrow, and who knew Canned Heat also did a "Christmas Album
So here we go with Eddie C Campbell
Regards Neil

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox.
Remembering Dale Watson and his "Flat Tire" from the PE Jukebox 10 trucking songs playlist, yes he has done a Christmas Album! Here's a nice little track from it captures his "sound" nicely.

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox.
Very surprised and maybe someone at Radio 2 HQ is following the world's best jukebox at the Pickled Egg.
Chris Evans breakfast Show this morning....Chuck Berry and "Run Rudolf Run" and Lightnin' Hopkins also made an appearance with his Christmas ditty on the Paul Jones Blues show the other day.
Regards Neil

Re: Pickled Egg Jukebox.
Anyone curious?
What makes this song appropriate for today
Difficult if you aren't a music encyclopedia, but come on, there are easy ways to find out these days.
Oh and "over the pond" this would also be an appropriate song for today...
Regards Neil
