205 Steering From Electric to Pulley

Post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all .

The electric pump for the power steering is dead on our 205.

We scrapped a 306 recently and have the brackets and pump for the power steering.

Any thoughts on running the 205 from the pulley pump instead of the electric pump ?

Will the 205 rack take the pressure supplied from the pulley pump ?

Thanks in advance.

I never knew the 205 ever had electric power steering - certainly never seen one in the UK.

Is your 205 a very late one?

It really depends on how the pressure in the system is controlled. Some electrical steering systems run the electric pump with variable speed to control the pressure and level of assistance. If it is that sort, then an engine driven pump is not likely to have a good outcome. It may also be that the pinion valve for an electrically driven system has too much restriction when not providing assistance, which would put a lot of strain on everything.

Hello again.

Its a 1997 car , a 205 generation - so electric/hydraulic power steering.

Dont know about the speed control - will have a look at servicebox.

Thanks for the info

That is a late one... I don't believe we ever had that one in the UK and as far as I know imports stopped in 1995/6...

I believe 205 production carried on in France for several years after... Up to 2000?

I also didn't know that 205's ever had electric pump steering

Daughter's Pug 106 Diesel had it though, on a UK 'R' plate, 1997; Mk2 shape (Mk1's didn't have PAS). Mounted to the (UK) nearside of the engine bay, at the very front, close to the radiator.

Can't be sure its the same, but seems likely; might be easier to find than an electrically pumped 205.

I would imagine those very late 205s share a lot of 106 components so on that basis a 106 donor might be worth looking into...

My daughter's S-reg 106 Quiksilver (RIP) also had an electric pump, so +1 suggesting this as an alternative source.

Thanks Paul - we think...... does it show that much ????
And you only know about our car stuff........

The 106 is not very common here in France compared with the 205 and the Citroen C15 is also a source.

Crazy as it seems, we have had the measuring tape out for the 306 rack, and surprisingly in its bare bones it has the same dimensions and bolt holes as the 205 rack.

The track control arms are approximately 45mm longer each side which accounts for the 306 being a wider car.
The rack is connected by a universal swivel joint to the steering column.

If the angle of the output shaft of both racks is the same then it might be an option.
That way we would have matched the rack and the pump.
However - if they are the same we would not immediately change the rack - just the pump and pipes to see if the rack can stand up to it.

Of course it might all be just talk - if an electric pump dropped into our laps we would fit it immediately.

How common is the Saxo ? it too had an electric steering pump and its pretty much mechanically & electrically identical to the 106.
I've never seen a 205 with an electric steering pump either.

Hello again and a big thank you to all.

Who said the 106 was not common here in France ?????? Us actually.
Not that many on the roads - plenty in the scrapyard.

We got a pump from a 106 at our scrappie.

Not the exact same pump but the electric motor was identical.

We split both units (broken 205 system and scrappie 106 system) and made up a unit from the 106 motor and the 205 pump.

ALL POWER RESTORED :) :) :) :) :)

Have fitted the larger wheels and tyres from a scrapped 306 so mega grip now. Hubcaps discarded and painted the wheels white so doesn't look too bad.

Having a go soon at fitting the disks and calipers from the 306 (as we already have them for free)

Back axle is beginning to lean out a bit.

Have done 5000km in it since 27th September and havn't been on any long trips. Plenty for a car of that age.

Still searching for that elusive 205td - 3 door which has to be cheap. Oh and the newest demand is that it has to be white too.
Maybe the winter will throw up something .....

Excellent news!

Since you were last on I've acquired a S1 Saxo (106 in disguise) and that has the electric pumped steering and it's good... The pump motor looks very similar to a Xantia cooling fan motor...

I know you want a white 205TD but a white Saxo you may find will fill the bill... To my mind the Saxo is right up there with the 205 in vying for the best small car ever awards :)

Maybe so Jim - but 205 has the look.

Have you seen the full rally sticker kits on eBay.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PEUGEOT-205- ... NUEtGfAghA

A 205td with the 1.9td engine fitted and the turbo tweaked a bit would do nicely - until they ban it.

We could change it to "Historic Vehicle" befor 2030 to try to keep it rolling.

Gosh yes, a pocket rocket :-D 8-)

A 205STDT goes like a scalded cat so a tweated 1.9TD has to be ven better!

Go for it ;)
